Buy a Dodge. Oh, and buy an extended warranty that also gets you a loaner, you will need both.

    Test drive the 2017 Colorado/Canyon.

New engine and new transmission for 2017.

Even though on paper the engine only makes like 3 more HP, it does 0-60 in 6.1 seconds and a sub 15 second 1/4 mile.

Once again though, new engine and trans from GM so longevity may be a concern to you.

Keep in mind that if you plan to go off road, your best bet is still the Tacoma and Frontier Pro-4X.

There's a lot of disdain on here for the Big 3 trucks so be aware comments toward them have an innate bias.

Despite the hate, there are thousands of Fords and Chevys out there with well over 200k miles and still going strong.

I just purchased mine a month ago - I came from an awd Trailblazer SS that had 400hp and 400tq. I don't miss it one bit! The TRD has plenty of juice you just need to be a couple gears lower. So you have to get it above 3500RPM, is that really a big deal?

    • I need the bed, which is my primary reason for getting a truck to begin with. Nothing truly commercial, but it will get frequent use for homeowner and landlord/maintenance purposes.
    • I need a 4-door cab; Wife, 2 kids, and at least one carseat back there for the next couple of years.
    • I want something more off-road capable than what I'm driving now for camping, hunting trips (another need for the bed), and light off-road exploring; a locking rear-diff is a must for me if I'm moving into a truck. Realistically, an F150 will probably be more than I need off road, and a Tacoma will be far more than I will ever need off-road.
    • I want something with more power than I'll need. This is partly egotistical. I don't have intentions of pulling burnouts or drag racing, but it feels good to have some reserve power on demand. I don't tow anything at the moment, although I did almost buy a 15ft fishing boat last year. Tacoma could handle that, so it is largely irrelevant.
    • Outside of that, we're getting into more subjective things like aesthetics, how big is too big, and reliability. I include reliability as subjective because I don't feel these 3rd gens have been around long enough to make a determination.
Cost...I'm not implying that I have unlimited funds, but in considering moving up to a fullsize F150, I also haven't ruled out a Raptor. Mentality being, at about 50K, why not just go all in by spending another 10K or so and get a legitimately badass truck. Realistically, I think I would have to exhaust all other options to make that move.

my ex bought a 15 f150 same time i bought the 15 tacoma. i had considered full sized trucks, but i only drive manual cars so that eliminated those for me. the f150 was very smooth and very comfortable. i used to steal my boss's gms sierra z71 all the time though, and that's probably my favorite full size truck.

If the Raptor is on the table, then get the Raptor, hands down, end of story, game over. Do it, do it now. And post pics

    Perfect solution for you:

A: Test drive a TRD off road in a manual transmission, I've driven the auto and the manual, I couldn't have this truck if it were only offered in auto. With the manual I decide what gear I want and if, or when I want power.

B: Search for in your area, and they're plenty I'm sure find a used certified low miles 2014 or 2015 2nd gen tacoma in an automatic transmission configuration. The old tried and true 4.0L in the 2nd gen tacomas are amazing. I used to own a 2010 trd and it was power on demand whenever I needed it plenty of torque. But due to financial problems at that time I had to let it go. Otherwise I'd still have it. Good luck with your decision.

if you like or want a MT truck then this can be a great one. if you don't care about the MT or want AT I'd move along to another i think. unless you also regear to 4.88.

I've owned full size trucks my whole life one of them being an 03 GMC 2500hd with a 496 big block 9 inches of lift and 38's it was overkill to say the least and not practical for anything on top of that I've never recieved more compliments on a truck than on my 2015 Tacoma. I sometimes miss the sound of a V8 but then I remind my self of the Camaro in the garage and all is well.

I had Ford and Dodge trucks before. I test drove the 17 Tacoma and really liked it a lot. The best reason I can say for you to look at these trucks is look at the resale value in 3-6 years vs a full size ford. These trucks really keep the resale value.

the f150 has surprisingly strong resale value for a domestic car, but obviously the t4r and tacoma are stronger

I can understand being disappointed with the torque below 40 mph but not at speeds above 40. I recommend you take another test drive and be sure to experience the upper rpm ranges, the 3.5 pulls pretty good from 3500-6000, certainly worlds better than the previous 4.0. If you can, drive a manual version... It's definitely the way to go in a '16-'17 Tacoma.

That being said, the 3.5 Taco will never accelerate as hard as a 5.0 or 3.5tt F-150.

Asking how others convinced themselves to buy a Tacoma...Tacoma World seems like an appropriate place for that.

Fact of the matter is, there aren't 600+ identical threads. If there were, somebody wouldn't have had to ask the question of "What are you looking for in a truck?" I didn't ask a close ended question that has a definitive answer, I asked something that requires discussion relative to my specific situation/wants/needs. I'm not going to get into a pissing match about this. I'm a longstanding member of numerous online forums and there are always a handful of people that love to throw around the "Try using a search" comment, but quite frankly it isn't relevant in this case for the reasons I just outlined.

Thanks for that...this is something I really hadn't considered. I may head back to the dealership this weekend and try the MT before making any decisions or ruling out the Tacoma.
