Bolt Size to Use with Puller, to Remove Crankshaft Timing Sprocket on 3.4L V6 5VZ-FE?

    Not the harmonic balancer/pulley, but the timing sprocket on the crank

    See the threaded hole in the pic below? There's two of em. They're smaller than the ones on the Harmonic Balancer

    One observes/remembers selectively plus I participated in that thread and my crank pulley holding tool came with the bolts for the timing gear. Don't ask me my land line phone number or my anniversary.

    I second that emotion, Cruiser! I searched for quite a while today and came up with a number of relevant threads, but none that mentioned the bolt size. Wish I'd have found that, before breaking off a chunk of the gear flange, with the teeth that the CPS senses. Glad to have that info now though. Thanks D.P.

    The damned thing is STILL on there, soaking in PBB. I even tried heating with a propane torch and prying from behind, which is when I finally broke it. The stealer's gonna get about $75 from me tomorrow, and the government will get another $7 or so...

    I have a steering wheel puller, like the one pictured in the referenced thread, but maybe I should borrow a puller from a parts store? I don't guess they would have the correct-sized bolts??

    I'm wondering if the leaking oil has baked onto the crank, gluing the sprocket on. Hoping like H-E double-hockey sticks it the seal and not the oil pump leaking. I have a 4WD and DO NOT want to drop the oil pan!

    Sorry man, that wasn't a dig at you. More of a little bit of a joke with Dirty.
    I can tell you've done your homework, brother. And I, for one, appreciate the detail you put into your posts. Makes it much easier on trying to help, instead of asking the standard 20 questions at the beginning of most problem threads. I wish I could be of help for you. And the reason I 'like' tons of dirty's posts is that it makes it much easier to find them later, to use as troubleshooting guides. The majority of his posts have a grip of info in them. So if I liked a post of his above that could've been taken the wrong way, it prolly had some good info.
    And if I wrote all this and you had never taken it the wrong way anyways...... Well.... Damn.

    Seriously, if you did or said something I may oughta have been offended by, I missed it. I appreciate help, wherever I can get it. I should probably spend more time on here, so I can share a bit of the knowledge I've gained, working on this puppy.

    I hope you can get it off with the puller. It's lucky these gears have the holes to use a puller with.

    If it didn't have the holes I was going to say you need at least a 2 foot pry bar to get the leverage to pry it off, and you need to get the pry bar down far enough to contact the crankshaft. What size/type of tool were you using to try to pry it when it broke?

    Wow I just can`t believe they are only M6x1.0 .

    All I can hope is the threads go through the gear.

    Use the longest bolts that don`t bottom out

    I just cringe putting enough pressure to break that loose on those M6 bolts

    Why not have the bolts bottom out? Seems you'd want them threaded as far as possible so the threads don't strip. Pulling evenly with the puller should do the trick.

    I'm curious why the seal is leaking so bad once the gear is removed. Is the seal damaged or maybe a scratch on the crankshaft damaging the seal?

    It's a pry bar. Decent size. Not sure it went all the way to the crank before it broke, but goes there now! In addition to TRYING not to break the sprocket, I had to keep in mind I was praying against the aluminum oil pump body.

    By the way, I see I responded to Wyoming earlier, when I should have addressed my comment to cruiser

    The threaded holes are only a tad over 1/4" deep, so yeah, not much of a purchase on this stuck sprocket.

    I'm not sure it's the seal leaking, but hoping it's the seal, as opposed to the oil pump o-ring, or gasket or whatever. I hope to be able to tell, when and IF I get the gear off.

    OK, I got it off, but it kicked and screamed all of the way.

    I cleaned up the crank with steel wool and sandpaper. It looks like its the main seal. Either I didn't seat the it properly before, or it worked it's away out on the bottom.

    Assuming I have no major issues swapping the seal, do you recommend using anitseize or something on the sprocket and harmonic balancer? I'll clean up the inside of the HB as well.

    I can confirm M6 x 1.0 is the bolt size for the threaded holes in the crankshaft timing pulley / gear / sprocket.
