Now that makes me sick to my stomach. I haven't had the noise happen again the last 2 days. I'll change my oil this weekend, keep driving it and hope for the best...

That's about all you can do. Those two pics were from yesterday...... I'm in the middle of putting it back together right now and am inside warming up...... It's 20* here and snowing. At first all I thought was that I needed to put a $3000 motor in the truck, but once I got over the initial shock I decided to pull the pan. I'm hoping to have dodged the bullet.

I would install a gauge and monitor the oil pressure, oil pump failure has killed a few 1gr-fe engines. Check out the thread I linked

I got chastised a bit in that thread for kinda agreeing with Torspd :)

@07 sport 4x4, thanks for finding that thread, I was trying earlier today and came up short. My "keyword" skills are not all that great.

FWIW, I have run 5w-30 synthetic in my '06 4cyl from day one because that is what the manual calls for (with regard to oil weight), no issues so far.

Yeah I'm a believer that a good oil of the specified weight is all that is necessary for a healthy engine. @qnyla has a 400k 1gr-fe that is a testament to that.

Yeah, I've always done everything exactly to the manufacturers recommendations. Including, oil, oil filter, plugs, etc. I installed a k&n air filter and I service that every other oil change (10k miles).

Being slightly out of warranty I don't want to take it to a dealer or shop and throw money at it to "try" to diagnose it. I bought a Tacoma specifically for their known dependability, and low cost of ownership / maintenance. Decisions, decisions.

If you were gonna take it to the dealer you'd be better off to grab a used engine out of a salvage vehicle for about 3k and be done with it.

Did it knock years previous at startup during winter? Or was this the first time it started doing it, and it continued to worsen?

The end of December was the first time and I then started hearing it just upon start-up. 2 weeks ago while driving to work it suddenly got really loud and pronounced, especially while going up hill under load and while decelerating. I bought the truck in 06/15.

Might be just a coincidence that it happened during winter, and/or a different problem all together. I get the knock, but it always goes away after warm, and only sporadically happens in winter.

Have you guys had the tune reflash? I am just curious if it is gas related and not oil.

Have you explored the possibility of the noise being an exhaust tick? Lots of ole Jeeps I've owned would tick when cold (due to a small exhaust leak at the manifold) and it's go away or calm down significantly once everything warmed up and the leak got slightly sealed up due to heat expanding gaskets/metal. Just a thought I didn't notice mentioned yet.

Jumping in an old thread here hoping someone has came up with some type of answers.

I noticed im having the same “deep ticking” noise, this morning it was 28 degrees where im at in jersey. My commute is only 8ish minutes to work. I hears the loud ticking noise again and it seems to be coming from the driver side of things. It’s usually heard when its cold outside aswell but i do not always hear it. After about 3-4 blocks of driving i didnt really hear it anymore. I did try to get a video of the noise also. I believe it may be lifter related but im not versed well in motor internals.

you can hear alot of valve noise which has always kind of been there and isnt too noticeable from the cab but you can definitely hear the “deep ticking” in the video.
