I guess it depends on where you live, driving habits, etc. I've just heard a few people complain over the mpg loss. If I installed a supercharger, I wouldn't be light on the pedal. :burnrubber:

It's a challenge, especially in traffic and up hills.

no problem on mpg's. I'm getting 15 or 16 and I'm not on it, almost never in the power surge and light on the throttle.

but only 3600 miles on the truck and a pedal commander so that is eating an mpg or so.

Toyota has a huge cafe Surplus. That's why they gladly take a loss on their EVs and the Mirai and are giving away the technology. Their trucks could get negative mpg and they would still be golden

The 2018 Lexus LS has a 3.5Lv6 with twin Turbo, I bet this engine shows up in the redesigned Tundra as competition to the Ecoboost F150's.

Presently the 5.7L in the Tundra is also in the Lexus LX570

You're a dreamer. I hope I am wrong and hopefully we see at the Chicago Auto Show what they have in store for the Tundra...

As for the supercharger there are already test units out there from Magnuson. Doesn't necessarily mean that the kit will make production though.

I have 2012 sport that's supercharged and I want to eventually get a 3rd gen but am hesitant unless someone comes out with a s/c. My roommate has a 2016 offroad and the thing is as slow as a turtle on a Sunday stroll. I don't remember my 4.0l being that sluggish without the s/c..

Love the 3rd gen look though

You heard it here first, 3.5L turbo as an optional Tundra engine with the redesign. 2.0L Turbo will be in the 2019 RAV4 two full years after Lexus introduced this motor.

I don't believe it would be a 2GR with turbos thrown on it. The 2GR was not designed for that kind of severe duty (forced induction and heavy towing/hauling).

It would need to be something more robust. That's not to say it wouldn't be in the 3.5L displacement range. But it would probably have little in common with all other 2GRs internally

Quoted for posterity. I hope you're right. Does your knowledge on the topic tell you that it will be released at the Chicago Auto Show?

IMO, a regear would be the cheapest and best performance upgrade for this truck. The 4.30 r/p (from the 4 banger) should be standard on all engine/trans packages. I was looking into getting a I4 AC 3rd gen before I found my FJ cruiser. Out of the 5 different I4 auto test drives not one of them gear hunted like some of the V6 videos I've seen posted on here, despite having almost 100 less peak HP. I'm willing to bet both I4 and V6 (in atkinson cylce) put out similar HP/torque ratings at cruising speed under 2500rpm.

Moving forward Toyota plans to use only nine engines with 17 variations of these engines. The Variations are the added on components such as Hybrid systems and turbo systems. These modular engines can be produced on the same lines with minimal disruption.

I'm definitely not holding my breath. Just because Magnuson says they're working on one doesn't mean it'll ever really exist. Ask them about the supercharger for the dual VVTi 4.0 engines they were working on...

This doesn't even take into account the lack of access for tuning. URD (aka @Gadget@URD) was the closest one to completing that task and he was sidelined for a LONG time due to some proprietary connector.

The only bright side here is that the Tacoma is a MUCH larger market. If this 3.5 engine is in the plan for 6th gen 4Runners (or whatever variant we get next) as well, it will probably be worth someone's time to figure this out and still make a profit.

That said I'm plenty happy with my manual and stock 4.30 rear end. When I lift and go with heavier tires I'll consider a regear and be done with it.
