Just wanted to post this as I am in the process of having my 2016 tailgate cylinder lock upgraded to a 2017 tailgate cylinder lock. You would need to get the cylinder re-keyed to the correct key to the key fob. I ordered the parts from Toyota and it's pretty pricey. The part number is 69055-04020 and the list price is 176.92 before tax. To re-key the lock cylinder it cost 65. When ordering through toyota the keys are preset to 2 keys that match the key cylinder and once re-keyed the 2 keys will not work any more but you can use your key fob key

You have a 17 right? They still give you that separate key but the key from in the fob is the same as the extra. Both work on the tailgate and the glove box. On the 16 model the separate key is not the same as the key in the fob. The key in the fob does not unlock the tailgate.

I just got my 2017 TRD Sport the other day, pretty sure the sales person didnt know what she was talking about, said the actual key was for the tailgate and that the key fob key wouldnt unlock it.. however just checked the key fob key and it locks/unlocks the tail gate just fine..

They told you that cause they assume it has a chip in it but you don't need one with a chip. I got mine done at Home Depot for about $7

If you have a '17, they won't be able to cut it. Only for '16. You would have to find a locksmith that has the right machine to do that kind of key cutting.

    Same here.
Just bought my '16 TRD Sport last Sunday. My key fob key works on both ignition and tail gate. Sales person thought there was a 3rd key that works only on the tailgate and ign key would not work. But there were only 2 key fobs and both work on the tailgate.
Lock n Pop sounds like a good idea though. I don't like inserting/turning keys.

Yeah didn't think about that, I guess anyone that can do a Lexus key could cut it.

Here's an update I just got my lock from the locksmith and installed it. Super easy to install and now I do not need to carry 2 different keys anymore. The one on the right uses the regular key and the one on the left uses our key fob key.

Hey @Aznray I called my dealership and they’re giving me a hard time about ordering parts (‘17 lock cylinder,
69055-04020) that don’t match my VIN since they “can’t guarantee it’ll work”. They also didn’t think it can be re-keyed. Other than the fact that you did it, any suggestions to facilitate the conversation?

I have 1 key that opens: door, glove box, and tailgate and is the ignition key for my '16......no separate keys needed.

Normally I just go to the dealership and talk to the parts counter. I would tell them the part number and they usually look it up. If they ask what kinda truck, just say it's for my 16 Tacoma because I want to match it with my key fob key and just say your next door neighbor had done this and it has worked or this is for your 17 taco and you lost the keys and get new ones and don't want to use your key fob key. Also, just say I didn't drive my truck today I don't have a vin. Just tell them to give you a new set of keys and lock and you should be fine. But before you order the parts I would check with your local locksmith and see if they can re-key lazer cut keys cylinders. Some Toyota dealership might know. The Toyota that I went to told me the local locksmith place that can re-key the cylinder. I usually don't call the dealership cause they are always busy. Usually I go in to the parts counter and talk it up and sometimes they give me discounts because I became a regular. Hopefully this helps. If it doesn't make sense let me know. Hopefully I covered all parts

This works for Tacomas that have push start as our tail gate keys are different. We have a smart keys and not the h keys that are usually on the sr, sr5, and I believe the manual models(not certain on the manuals models) on the 16 Tacoma we have to carry 2 sets of keys, one regular and one smart key. On the 17 model Tacoma they integrated the smart key fob with the tailgate key so they can carry one keys. Hopefully I explained this correctly

I agree on getting a pop n lock is a must, as I have it installed as well but at times when you want to just open the tail without hitting the alarm is nice and also using the key fob key is also nice as well.

I've installed pop n lock that is wired to passenger door to unlock. recently had a couple of times where when I use key fob to unlock it makes a less "pop" sound and doesn't engage the unlock. Have to cycle the unlock button 2-3 times before it does the normal loud "pop" and it unlocks. I've opened tailgate open and made sure it is still securely mounted. Has anyone had this same issue?

Do you know if it is possible to swap the 2016 glove box with the tailgate? I'd rather have the keyfob/key work on the doors and tailgate then the glove box.
