Thanks for the post I was about to buy one as well. I guess one is better off just adding locks to existing plastic doors.

Update: I contacted the manufacturer and they decided to send a replacement. Not sure if it would rust out again but I will try to spray some protection guard on them.

https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/tuffy-box-rehab.452125/#post-13281598 I made this thread up a while back after reading this thread removed my boxes and repainted them with Rustoleum and are holding up , I deleted some pictures from my Albums so there aren't a lot of pictures showing, but basically during the summer hot months I put on multiply coats and let bake in the sun of oil based paint. good to know that Tuffy is sending you a new box cause I have since sold my plastic OEMs.

tuffy boxes are nice but initially I would recommend putting protective coat on them before installing new. Tuffy recommends a rubberized under coating spray to them after the install, I yanked mine out and painted inside and outside with multiply coats of Rustoleum oil based paint and reinstalled.

I don't think rustoleum would help as much for my situation, as the main issue was the hinge was where the rust started. Opening and closing, any paint would just rub off. This leaves an exposed area to all kinds of elements to get into. I would recommend spraying with some kind of grease in the hinge area every other week, which I should have done in the beginning. This was a one time deal courtesy replacement from tuffy as they don't cover rust in their warranty.

Kinda convenient considering rust is about the only thing short of a severe collision that's going to be a problem on a steel box.

It seems like if those hinges were on the INSIDE of the box where it stays dry... :notsure:
If that's what they recommend to prevent the rust I don't understand why they don't come with that already on it?

very cool they gave you a replacement, I went to Tuffys website and read the warranty, says 1 year coverage from date of purchase and rust, corrosion damage is not covered under warranty.second paragraph>> https://www.tuffyproducts.com/t-warranty.aspx

I would definetly look into getting some kind of protection on the new box before installing, my hinges were rusting too I just painted over them too with Rustoleum. it sucks cause if these boxes don't hold up im f**ked cause I sold my OEMs boxes expecting these tuffys to go a long haul before any corrosion issues occured

I just installed one with a 3 number combination lock and the door is very loose. It's going to rattle and I can't imagine it's waterproof. It this normal?

It appears that the powder coat failed. It also appears that it was just powder coated. It would have been better to have primed it before the final powder coating (powder coat primer). The primer helps in corrosion protection. Improper washing could have been a factor as well. The washing process should be a zinc phosphatizing process for maximum corrosion protection. And to compound matters, hinges can be sometimes problematic especially when any part of the powder coating is breached. corrosion ends up forming under the powder coat and eventually lifts off. There are many variables for a failure like this and it's hard to pin down........
