honestly....i really dont know of any that are actually carb-legal in cali. but im pretty sure that just installing a better filter in there is legal for you.

 

so ur telling me that its better getting the filter rather then the whole intake?? right

 

definitely better!!! it costs way less, and the results are way better than any cai will give you.

The real question is "Is a CAI costing $250-$400 going to do more than a $50 drop in filter?" Personally, I think the stock intake is pretty big, and goes the same places as all the CAI's except for URD's which runs in front of the radiator. So I don't see any of them making much of a difference over stock with better filter let alone enough to justify the insane pricing on them.

 

definitely....and the same goes for cat-back exhausts, as far as im concerned!!

although alot of catbacks are stainless......you can get a muffler welded in place of the stocker, and get a nice stainless tip added for around $130.............and catbacks are way more than that......and its essentially the same(yeah,yeah.....except for the stainless part).

 

Well, after two tankfuls with the new AFE dry filter in my truck, I've seen no difference in gas mileage. The truck feels smoother off the start, which is nice but my day to day mileage remains the same. Personally, I didn't think it would make a difference. I also put synthetic oil in on my last oil change. Again, no difference.

 

Same here on the millage difference. I have a K&N drop in and I haven't seen any difference.

 

I have worse gas milage after the afe how long do you think it will take for the computer to relearn or compensate?

 

How many miles do you guys have on your trucks? Do you have the secondary filter removed?

I had around 45k on mine when I swapped I think, with the secondary removed. I noticed a 1mpg increase the first half tank after the filter went in. I know 1mpg isn't much, but I'd NEVER gone over 18mpg the year and a half-2 years prior to the filter. Now the full tanks net between 20 and 20.5.

Either way, it'll save money not paying $20 for replacement stock filters.

Oh, and I noticed it got up to higher MPG readings on the SG sooner with the AFE so the SG has helped me maintain those numbers along my 30 commute.

 

On my first tank after the AFE (and a bedliner) I got 27.4 mpg. On the second tank I got 25.4, but I let my girlfriend drive about 80 miles on that tank and who knows how she drove. I also hauled a couple loads of 1500 lbs. of landscaping rock on that tank. I only have about 3000 miles on my 08 4x4 4cyl but the best I've gotten until now was about 26.5 so it seems that the AFE is helping. Also, I don't have my secondary air filter removed.

 

I've also seen no difference. I'm still around 17.5mpg local driving. Highway may be different but I rarely drive on one. It's fine, though, because I never expected an increase and I'll save in the long run. Response does seem to be improved and it seems to launch off the line quicker. Could be my butt dyno is out of whack, though.

 

I have 10K on mine (just did the 10k service). I didn't do the secondary air filter removal. I don't know if it would give me a problem for a smog visual check later on or not (I don't know if they look in there or not). It's worth it for the savings on filters. Plus as WilsonTheDog said, it feels better from a start.

 

It might just get better in general with more miles. I noticed a definite improvement in the transmission and engine around 15k. Like enough to say to myself one day "hmmmm.... everything seems smoother now.... acceleration, shifting, less engine lug at lower RPMs..." And again it seemed to settle in a little more around 20-30k. It's hard to explain. It's definitely improved since I drove off the lot, and it took a LOT more than the 500 or 1000 mile break in time they claim.

 

Update. My avg. MPG with the secondary air filter removed and AFE installed went down to 19-19.5. I was avg. 20.5-21. I re-installed the secondary air filter and my mileage has jumped back to 20.5-21. So in my case the removal of the secondary air filter was detrimental to MPG and the AFE has had no affect on MPG.

 

How many miles/gallons of gas did you go through in between? Since the truck would need to to recalibrate the AFR I would assume.

 

with AFE in and 2nd air removed, about 4000, at least 10 tanks of gas. AFE and 2nd air re-installed, 3 tanks.

 

wow. That is quite a bit of driving.
