Saying everyone complains about the auto tranny, and have since the launch of the truck over a year ago, and the obvious solution is get a manual tranny. But nah, people keep buying the auto tranny they know is going to suck, then add to the complaints about it sucking instead.

Yea he is tuning 3rd gens, and like hank heel said he tunes everything. My brother brought his 2016 is350 in for a dyno tune and we both watched as he pulled the ecu out of the car, cracked it open, and proceeded to read the data directly off the processor, he ended up deciphering the codes and unlocked it, letting him tune the car. All this happened within a 30 min span.

I can see them making a turbo for it. I would def consider it.

Im so curious if Toyota sees the dislike for this new engine. Clearly people are buying the 4.0 Runner because they don't like the 3.5. I wonder if they'll do the same mistake with the runner, or they'll stick a 'revised' 3.5 so it has less problems.

You guys should save your money and buy a little mustang or something to feed the petrol cravings inside of you, thats what i did. My weekend car is the mustang, and i never wish my runner was faster. Not to mention my mustang gets better MPGs :annoyed:

I can actually +1 on that one. I talked with a Toyota Rep about the new engine + transmission, and all they said is, "We're working out the issues, but we'll take note of what you said."
I was pretty shocked with such a vague response. My buddy bought a ford explorer with the turbo 3.5L engine the first generation it came out. He's broken 120k miles, lifted it, and done all sorts of crazy stuff with it.
Im surprised toyota is having issues with this non-blown 3.5.

Certainly not everyone - plenty on and off this board are happy with the AT.

They all have the same issues. The difference is some people have just settled for what it is.

The ironic part is they're complaining about the future. I doubt taco and runner will have different engines, unless runner gets heavier- then it'll need a couple more horses imo

I haven't 'settled' for anything. Having driven several of small displacement engines that have come to the market in the past 5yrs my 3.5 and the tranny pretty much feel exactly as I expected. Is it perfect? No. Would prefer the Manuel? Yes, but a manual isn't practical for me at the moment. Does the 3.5 lack power? No. Is light on torque low in the RPM? Yes, but show me a small displacement motor, even one that is turbo charged, that isn't.

Check out the reviews of the Ecoboost Rapter and you will see the primary complaint is lack of low end grunt and a 10 speed tranny that hunts for gears when driven around town in traffic.

The fact is that Toyota as well as a majority of the automakers are making a move to engines and transmissions of this design and they will not be going back. However, they will get better. Just going to take time.
