just bought my wife a Subaru Outback and am hopeful to find a place for quality information, like here at TCWorld, from other people.

I haven't found any that aren't filled with advertisements...have any of you found a decent one?

Subbed. Hope to buy an Outback for my wife in the next 48 months. Would like to know how to remove the massive roof rack to help MPGs. My truck will be the cargo carrier for camping trips, but the Outback will be for commuting and road trips.

That would be awesome...used to have a 2.5RS (a toy which i sold to get my Tacoma). Unfortunately, I got her an Outback.

    GREAT tip though, thanks!

my family has had Subaru's since 1980...this is my third (her first). definitely recommend one.

So far, with the roof rack our mileage is still around 32 on the highway and we were bucking a pretty good wind for about 250 of that trip. that makes me happy, so we can put a box on top of it for the kiddo's stuff when doing a road trip.

After registering there and reading a few threads I didn't get a warm fuzzy for it. I haven't been back in a while

You mean the folding roof racks in the 4th & 5th gen Outbacks? I don't think they take much away from MPG as they're pretty streamline when folded to the sides. Our '14 OB usually gets 30-32 mpg on the highway with the 6sp manual transmission. Glad that you're looking at them, great all around car and built like a tank.

Edit:. OP, I haven't found a good forum either, at least not one as good as TW.

Subaruoutback.org is a great site WAAAy more refined than here -a lot of great people and they will give you good advice and info.
The deal is that you will see lots of advertising TILL YOU SIGN UP --then after - none at all! I have been a member since early 2015 -right before we bought our 15 OB Limited.
OK there is still a few down the right side of the screen --I just ignore them

Drove an Outback today. First Subaru experience.

Zero complaints. Looking forward to the day I purchase one.

If your "warm-fuzzies" mean lots (too much) of sarcasm and cutsie little pop up pics etc. --then NO it won't suit you. If you want just good info and advice about your Subaru Outback -that's what you will get!

Ther is one individual there that is a walking textbook on the 5th gen Outbacks. I think he spends most all of his time studying the Subies. He goes by ammcinnis. He is serious and to the point --usually not wrong on anything he puts out

What the heck does all this mean?
All I am telling you or anyone else who is interested -- where to find a good Outback site.
If you don't like the advice Don't use it - I really don't care - thank you!

We get great (as advertised) mileage on our 15 in the warmer months -- it seems to go down in winter. And BTW --You can't get a MT in USA Outbacks for anything past 15's. You can still get a MT in Canada.

We were fortunate to get one of the last manual OB's. I specifically sought it out because I like that the AWD system is old school mechanical center differential with viscous coupling and 50/50 power split. The computer controlled systems with clutch packs in the OBs with CVT are great and probably just as reliable, but I just feel (note: purely subjective) that simpler is better.

I'll play not an Outback, but we have had our 16 Forester for 1 year and still getting 30-31 mpg. No long trips just around our area. We use SubaruForester.org

My wife and I have had 10 Subarus over the years - both are driving Outbacks right now. Our first was a 1973 Sedan that Lynn's parents gave her before we were married. Our first new one is pictured below - a 1976 4WD wagon; the first 4WD Subaru introduced before they eventually went to AWD. I've also had a 1983 Brat, a 2003 Baja and Lynn has had a Tribeca and several other Outbacks. We love them and have had very few issues over the years.

Mark --is your new one a 4 or a 6? Old Subarus? we have you beat --I bought one of these to get around on Okinawa and Kadena AFB
in 1970-71 bought it for 300 and sold it for 250. Notice the "air conditioner" between the two headlights:
    upload_2017-2-5_10-44-0.jpg

Ours had a lot more rust and did get picky about running when it rained (a lot of the time on Okinawa)
