What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Hit or miss. I think there's a few different part numbers. Have the grab the joints and see if they have bolts with them.

FWIW, I was unable to find them at any local hardware store. They're grade 10.9 flanged M10 fine pitch or something like that.

 

To get a nice mask on the plastic trim between the flare and the body, I just taped over it and used a sharp utility knife blade to carefully cut the tape along the seam between the plastic trim and the flare. I ran my thumbnail along it to create a nice crease. Made a nice, defined line to following for cutting. Peel away the tape and you have a near-perfect mask.

I used 1-inch painter's tape. It made the job a little tedious. I'm going to use at least 2" tape for this part on the other three fenders.

 

Yeah I'll see if it comes with them. If not, I'll order through Toyota if possible. If I can't, I will look around or order online if I have to. Thanks for the info.

Of course, it's Sunday, so I will have to wait until tomorrow. Sunday is the worst day of the week.

 

As usual, like anything having to do with paint, the key to how well it turns out is in the detail of the prep.

Finally replaced my original factory installed shocks with 247,000 on them! PO didn't do anything on the suspension from what I can tell. So it will become new a little at a time...got the very gently used shocks and springs off OfferUp for very little cash, so that will hold me over until I decide what lift to put on.

FWIW...

I have used both Rustoleum and Duplicolor rattle can bed liner. And the Duplicolor kicks the Rustoleum's ass. The Rustoleum stuff flakes off and rubs off. The dupilcolor stuff is more "rubbery" and flexes better. I like the finish of it better too and it lasts way longer.

 

I'll have to try the Duplicolor when my leftover Rust-Oleum is gone. I did my sliders with Rust-Oleum and I haven't been impressed. Granted, I did do them when it was cold, which is not ideal, though I waited longer than typical for drying. Still, I will try Duplicolor next.

 

I did my sliders with the rustoleum stuff too and my front bumper. Redid the bumper in duplicolor and its MUCH better off. All my other stuff is always done in the duplicolor stuff and works great. Holds up well and doesn't fade. Easy to touch up too.

 

Sounds like it's the way to go. Once I finally get around to cleaning the truck, I will touch up the sliders. Sort of looking forward to running out of Rust-Oleum so I can justify buying the Duplicolor.

But first, gotta replace that LBJ.

I do plan on doing both, as well as the other UBJ. But those driver side parts might have to wait a little bit for funds to catch up.

The LBJ bolts are available from Mcmaster Carr for a fraction of the price of the dealership. 5 bucks for a 10 pack, then you have two trail spares

@lotuscupcar, no it's not hard at all to replace rear shocks. Leaf springs aren't too difficult either.

On mine it was a PITA! Everything was rusted...even after soaking in PB Blaster, it took a lot of effort to break them loose. Ended up cutting a couple of bolts off. PO spent the 1st 4 winters in Boston before moving to Arizona. So some rust issues.

I should be able to have the LBJ on Tuesday. I'd prefer to replace the part the same day. I see they have a next-day air option, but usually that's some absurdly high cost. And it would likely end up costing more than going through the dealer. And I can't seem to view shipping costs before putting all of my information through.
