:( He's a cute little guy. Stinks the placement didn't work out. I like the idea of the vibrating collar.

That is smart! And using your head. I resisted ecollars for a long time because I have seen more harm then good from them. Because the owners didn't understand what they were doing. I think anyone that uses stim should be well educated in their use. Just vibrate is enough to get both my dogs attention but when a porky, wolf pack or logging truck goes by sometimes an electrical stim is required to get their attention back where it should be and can and likely has saved their life.

I know some people use them on low to turn a dog when hunting to get them to hunt where they want. Took me a lot of years to figure it out but the dog knows where to hunt LOL. Might take them a couple of years to get to that point but watching them learn and the light bulb come on is priceless to me. Got to see that with my 2 year pup in SD this year. I just let the dog hunt and then hunt the dog.

Have used Dogtra collers in the past for my flushers they have about a mile range but conditions play a large part in that. 2 years ago tried a 5 year old rescue English Setter. Back in the early 80's had an English Setter and missed the beauty of the point. Well Charlie would run an easy 1,000 yards in the woods. With the wolf population so high here it drove me nuts. And not as young as I used to be getting to a point that far away in downed timber is for the young and foolish :)

Even in the prairie grass for phez it was too far many times for me to keep track of him. I ended up spending a small fortune and got a garmin alpha and TT15 collar. It is a handheld GPS so I can see where he was (usually out of sight LOL) and still have estim and vibrate, which is the function I most use.

He was huge as a Setter goes at 75 pounds but was a sweetheart. He ended up in ND with a dentist that hunts on horseback and everyone is happy. Happy endings for dogs are too rare I'm afraid.

Ended up getting another Toller as a flushing dog working at 40 yards or less is more my speed. And the main reason I hunt birds is to watch the dog work. Still have the $800 collar and use it on my pup. The peace of mind knowing where he is if he takes off is priceless to me. And when he does take off after a crippled runner I can watch him on the Alpha. He is a bull in a china closest and likes to run through the ruff stuff and blow stuff up. And a great hunter and retriever. Had to get him a protective vest to protect him. You can see the hits he takes on his vest from the timber. Along with his satellite antenna.

They claim 9 mile range on the Alpha but in reality is more like a couple of miles at best. I did the A pillar mod and have a Ram mount so I can attach the Alpha if I have to drive to track him down.

Have the magnetic antenna that I can throw on the roof and pug in and track from ~12 miles away. Hope I never have to do that and if I do something is seriously wrong. But am prepared if I have to. Despite all the money I spent on the Alpha for the Setter it has been so worth it to me for the peace of mind it gives me in the big woods like Superior National Forrest. And being in the Iron Range compasses can be worthless and actually get you in trouble. The satellites not so much but still like to be aware of where I am at and carry good old fashioned topos.

Can be done with scent work and time but best to just teach him not to chase them in the first place. He gets near a rooster not afraid of fighting he will win the war eventually but will lose several battles with the accompanying vet bills to show for it. :{ A friend of mines pit bull found out about rooster spurs the hard way .. Mind you this pit was a love puppy wouldn't hurt a living human now chickens and squirrels yeah you best run for cover he didn't kill them he just chased them to no end . Till he met up with a rooster my friend had bought not sure what kind but that damn chicken had huge .. eggs would stand up to anything human or animal lol well dog sees it first time it is out of the coop after being kept in to "train" it to the coop and goes tearing off after it lol the description of the scene from my buddy had me in stiches. Dog goes for it expecting the chase is on , rooster turned and flew up at him dog put the brakes on . Mexican stand off for a moment dog charges again same routine apparently went on for a few minutes while my buddy is trying to herd the rooster back into the coop yard . Well rooster dodged him at the gate dog came in again rooster wins spurred him on his muzzle .. dog goes tearing off howling rooster just walks into the coop yard. I was cracking up at this point hell so was my buddy when he told me what happened :} He had to go get the dog from under the deck clean him up cut was not bad just really a scratch but that was all it took. The dog would not come out from the back yard or porch if he had the rooster out of the coop yard , this I witnessed lol I had a biscuit and he would not come to me as the rooster was a few yards behind me.

Yeah ahh huh big bad pit bull whupped by a chicken ::} turned into a chicken.. Still all in all it could have ended badly for either or so best train the pup not to go near livestock for the safety of all concerned.

I will not hunt a dog on pheasants his first year for that very reason. People underestimate roosters LOL. But they can use those razor sharp spurs to inflict some damage in a hurry and it is usually to the dogs face. And carrying back a cripple that wants to fight can make a dog become hard mouthed in a hurry. To the point he hands you a pile of birdburger with feathers.

Wild Dakota rooster spurs. Do you blame the dog?!
