    Keep in mind. Most folks who overchange their oil are doing it because

    1) it makes them feel good.

    2) they've never done an independent lab oil test to show exactly what their specific motor/oil brand choice rates at

    3) someone else told them to

    4) they think they are smarter than ChemEs and tribologists that make the OE specs. Which, BTW, those OE specs are always conservative.

    The prevailing defense is it's 'cheap insurance'. But I'd be a good Ruben sandwich the majority of them never keep a vehicle past 100k

    So let's sit back and enjoy another round of old (or maybe they are new?), wives tales. :D

    PS. Maybe they need their own hashtag. Like #notmyoilchangespecs

    Every 7500 miles with full synthetic and a Toyota filter. Takes me 15 minutes and zero tools, and 10 of the 15 minutes is just letting it drain.

    Is Zero Tools a brand name? If not, do please describe how you're changing the filter on your third gen with no tools?

    Also, how are you disposing of the used oil in that portion of the five minutes not spent waiting for it to drain?

    Maybe he chews off the oil pan drain plug with his teeth? Sig says he drives a 2nd gen anyway.

    That one's solvable with prior installation of a Fumoto valve so I gave it a pass. :)

    Knew a guy once who just drove onto a construction site and drained the oil into the dirt(*). Funnel not required for filling if you're quick and don't mind making a mess if you're not quite quick enough.

    I think that opening the filter housing drain and removing the filter housing itself would be difficult without tools though.

    (*) He also got caught, cited, and fined. Mostly 'cuz he did it in daylight like a dumbass.

    I have the oil changed in my Tacoma once a year. The owner's manual states 10K or one year which ever comes first. I currently have 1,384 miles on my Tacoma. It was purchased in March 2016. I have an LOF service scheduled for 7 March 2017 which is approximately one year.

    In September 2016, I took my Tacoma in for the 5K or six month tire rotation. I had about 600 miles on my Tacoma at the time. I was told I really didn't need the tires rotated with so few miles. They said it was up to me if I wanted anything done. I declined the 6 month tire rotation as it was unnecessary.

    In January 2017, I did get a tire rotation done when I upgraded to the SR5 alloy wheels.

    Filters are hand tight, fumoto valve underneath. No, I don't consider a funnel a tool, but whatever. Oil goes into empty oil bottles and back to wallyworld whenever I make a trip.

    Added bonus - a full syn change costs <$40.

    I don't know what tools you 3rd genners need to fight with the filter. Mine sits on top of the engine and removes by hand.

    That is quite apparent.

    I'm unsure why you're advising a 3rd gen owner on oil changes with what you do for a different motor, but whatever.

    Curious on one thing though - you are getting a filter plus 7 quarts of 0W20 synthetic for that $40? Which brand?

    2nd gen filters are $4 and it takes 5.5 qts of oil. Mobil 1.

    :thumbsup: Third gen V6 is 6.2 quarts. Also has a 10,000mi / 12 month OCI.

    I'll see if I can pull a sample as I get to 7-8k miles on my oil and have an analysis done to see if that seems to be okay or if an earlier change interval is warranted.

    In my case, recycling motor oil is an extra trip/stop somewhere. I rarely ever go to a Walmart.

    ...^^^... I have no idea on the "life of the engine" ... just like to have reasonably fresh and clean lubricants in the vehicle.

    RE: all of the "RTFM" responses, it's not that easy any more. The last new car I bought (a 2003 Ford Focus) had ONE manual of about 350 pages with everything very clearly laid out. My 2017 Tacoma came with Owner's manual (640 pages), the "Quick Reference Guide" (44 pages), both of which refer to the 66-page Warranty and Maintenance Guide in regard to scheduled maintenance. I found the answer by searching the PDF versions (via the Toyota Owners app on my phone) but it still took about 10 minutes.

    Also, when I found it, I was kind of surprised that they only call for oil changes at 1 year or 12,000 miles. That's basically the same schedule I'd had with my Focus (I average 7,500 miles/year). I guess the synthetic oil makes that possible.

    Since the ToyotaCare deal covers the first 4 service visits, I'm covered for a while. I've changed my own oil plenty in my life, but if it's included in the purchase price for a while, even better. Plus, I'm not going to do anything to potentially void the warranty. While I have no qualms about doing so in other areas (home electronics, computers and such), none of those things cost as much as my new truck.

    As you can see, you will get a variety of responses including some unnecessary commentary. I assume you are looking for opinions, which is the purpose of any forum, so here's mine.

    I've read SOOO much about the longevity of synthetic oil but to me, dirt in oil is the same regardless of the type. That being said, I change my oil and filter every 5,000 miles.

    So far I've changed the oil myself at 5,000 and 15,000 miles and had the dealer change it ((Toyota care) at 10,000 miles. Toyota care rotates the tires every 5,000 miles. I currently have a little over 15,000 miles on my 2016.

    I bought 10 Toyota oil filters online for a really good price and use the 0-20W synthetic for oil changes that I do myself.
