My parents build a house brand new about 6 years ago and I remember going to the house with my dad pretty regularly to inspect and do some self upgrades like installing our own insulation in the walls of the garage. Really opened my eyes to that world even though I was a high schooler and knew nothing about construction

Its crazy the corners they cut! I worked at Home Depot/building materials in HS and college. Did some dry wall for a shortime too.

    Home builders just suck!

I was really exposed to big budget cutting corners when I worked for three weeks turning apartments at a complex in Clemson at the end of the summer. They built the entire place in three months in the summer when it rained almost every day. Every door is a closet door, the exterior doors always needed work, I could go on... They also engaged in some shady business practices like charging a previous renter the price of a bedroom door and just buying a closet door to replace it instead. I remember in one apartment an animal soiled a bedroom baseboard and I was told to put as many coats of paint on it as it took to get rid of the smell.

...my house is crooked. Like no shit, not square. You can see it with OCD eyes but you think, "Nahhh..." until you breakout tape measures, levels, and squares when you've got shit else to do. It's not everywhere, but it is there.

:headbang: gonna love the 500 mile break in all the way home. follow instructions on it to the T. I think it was 20 minutes driving, 30 minutes stopped, 3 times. then 50 miles driving, and 30 minutes not. all the way to 500  then change out gear oil with the thick shit (85-140)

agreed, it is a rarity to find a house or building with walls / foundation square, plumb, true. there are allowable tolerances, and they suck
