Nice! Im looking into getting a subcompact .45 for carrying in the woods. Narrowed it down to Glock 30, Springfield XD, or Sig Sauer.

Can't go wrong with either. This is my first Glock. I put about 100 rnds through it on Saturday (with a friend contributing) and like it quite a bit. Trigger is a little heavy (~6lb), but got used to it quick. I'm hoping to pick up a G19, XD9, or Sig P320. Whichever I find the best deal on when the time comes to buy.

Nice. No jams or anything? I figure a .45 is going to be the best in the woods (besides a .44 mag or .50) that I can still comfortably hike with and open carry and not have it be too big. Currently have a Ruger .380 LCP for concealing

No jams and it ate everything we put in it. I second a .45 for hiking/woods. I'd like to be certain a predator is dead rather than piss it off with a 9mm. I'll get a .45 at some point!

Now that grizzlies and wolves are coming into our mountains I want something to sleep next to rather than just my 110lb blonde girlfriend. Although I don't have to run fast, just have to outrun her..

Whenever you make it out this way let me know. There are some great people around here that are more than happy to get together and hit the trails. I'm a Colorado newb so my trail knowledge is limited compared to others. We'll get a group together if/when you come enjoy the high life.

I definitely want to do black bear pass but would also like to do holy cross and chinamangulch.. I know there's a bit of a distance between them though so I'll have to do some research and put a realistic list together.

I haven't ran any of those trails, but I'm pretty sure Brett has. @Squeaky Penguin care to chime in?

Yeah, you'd be moving across the state to hit those, but would be easily doable. Holy Cross is a must do, and is probably an hour and half or so away from Chinamans, which is 4 hours from Black Bear and the Alpine Loop. All depends on how much time you'd be spending out here and what trails you really want to hit. Black Bear is pretty incredible, but not nearly as challenging or scary as its cracked up to be.

IMO, you'd be driving right by a bunch of awesome trails driving between Chinamans and the Alpine Loop. Do some research on trails out here, lots of information on this site and elsewhere. Don't overlook lesser known trails to spend time at the overexposed Alpine Loop.

I'd rather have a pistol than not have a pistol.

I'd rather have bear spray any day.

I've lived in Grizz country pretty much my whole life. Im not scared of them. Plus, if a bear wants to eat me. Pretty much just gotta accept it. Unless you're practicing with your pistol 3-5 times a week so that you can shoot it very accurately very quickly. AND under extremely high stress with adrenaline pumping through you which changes things a lot as it is. You won't do shit to a bear that is charging you. Been proven time and time again.

Plenty of horror stories about it and also plenty of stories of pistols saving people. But the difference is the owner.

Bear spray takes basically no practice. Don't need to "aim" as much.

In reality. Griz's don't attack much especially offroaders. Usually only back woods people who find themselves in the wrong place and the wrong time get attacked. Our trucks are bear repellent as it is. They are loud, we are loud, and stink. They keep far away from us.
