Thanks for the write up. came in handy today. only 5k miles but had to change out the needle bearing. that was some dark gear oil. magnet was pretty dirty too. may try the transfer case soon.

 

Good Morning...I found the listings for the crush washers on the first page or two...and that is nice. However, when I did my 90k service on my '11 AC 4x4 manual, 4.0, both the fill and drain plug on the front diff were unhappy...had to tap in the allen wrench, then beat if off the wrench with a 2# ball peen, wire brushed, soaked it in the parts tank and such before reinstalling, but they need to be replaced.

Does anyone have the part numbers to the drain and fill plug on the front diff handy so I can online order and avoid making a trip to town?

The numbers I found for the crush washers are:

I buy my gear lube by spec in the five gallon bucket, and use a hand pump with a long hose and curve nozzle, and normally go through a bucket a year, depending on the work I am doing, sometimes, a couple buckets a weekend if a bunch of us have been through deep water or if we are maintaining a fleet of motorcycles for yearly change out of vital fluids. Current bucket, from Amazon, Castrol Heavy Duty Gear Lube, API GL-5, 80W-90. I collect the old pails and use them around the shop, there must be 10 different brands represented. I am quite partial to the Valvoline and Castrol brands. The NAPA house brand is Valvoline, last time I checked.

This is a very helpful thread...I did the entire truck with a 10mm allen, long, socket mount, 3/8" and a 24mm chrome short socket on a 18" flexhead 1/2" ratchet. The allen is Armstrong brand, and I got this set from McMaster-Carr, and the 24mm socket was a cheaper from Northern Tool, the impact in the same size in Williams, now a Snap-on Brand. Ratchets were both Craftsman, neither one is newer than 20 years.

Greatly appreciate the how to instructions for replacing the gear oil in the fron and rear differential. I plan on tackling this job over the weekend but before I do I would appreciate if someone can clear a few things up for me. I have a 2009 Tacoma Sport Dbl Cab and intend to use Mobil 1

$28 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube - 1 Quart (Pack of 2)

75W-90 LS gear oil in the rear. I'm confused as to whether or not I'm suppose to use the limited slip additive (CRC Equa-Torgue) with the Mobil 1. I called two different dealers and I was given two different answers. Any clarification? Thanks

 

I thought 09 doesn't have mechanical limited slip. Afaik only 05 - 08 Sport had mechanical limited slip diff where addictive was required and any other combination/trim of Tacoma does not need it.

Thanks...ordered all the gear oil and crush washers to do the job. I'm very concerned that I waited so long (95,000 miles) to do this job and here I thought I took good care of my truck. Until reading this post I had no idea this should of been done at 30K. Hope this lack of service hasn't done any harm. Thanks again for everyone's info.

You should be okay. Did mine for the first time at 60k.

 

Went through quite a few posts and didn't see an answer. One quart for transfer be sufficient? Do i need to worry about the .1?

 

Fill it until it's full. (coming out the fill port) Or 1.1 quarts (35oz) whichever comes first.

Okay now I'm back to being confused again...Asuchemist has a 2011 and says his tacoma requires the lsd additive. Curious if he has the decal on the rear differential 'cause mine does not. Should I just add the lsd additive and forget about it? Plan on doing this oil change this weekend. Thanks for any suggestions that will clear this issue up.

 

In my opinion, you don't need the additive. I doubt it would harm anything if you decide you do.
