I know I'm new to this forum, and perhaps ignurnt, but while examining the airbox for the deckplate mod I noticed the topside trap door to remove/insert the air filter. I popped the door off easily at the hinges and presto...a free flowing air supply directly above the air filter. This gave me at least 2 mpgs when I don't stomp on it to get it to make that cool sound. :)

Regarding my previous post here; why do the deckplate mod when this seems to work the same?

If you can service/change an air filter, you can do a deckplate mod. It's that easy.

Prophet, that is an awesome idea as a first step. I live in California, and I was wondering about passing smog inspection with a modified airbox (deckplate), so I am digging pretty hard to see if people have run into trouble with CA smog certs after installing it. I was looking into the elbow mod, too, as a stealth intake mod that would not be visible during inspection.

So how long have you been running this way, and what kind of filter are you using? Any issues? Seems you might get a lot of dirt at the top of the filter?

if i am reading you correctly...are you saying you remove the whole botttom of the airbox? and you just have the filter like taped to the top section of the airbox?

I think he means simply the OEM access door to R&R the stock filter. It just hinges open at the top. This gives you a 3" by 10.25" opening (30.75 sq. in.). No cutting or mods involved. (see attached pix)

A deckplate mod using a 4" dia. deckplate gives you about 12.5 sq. in.

So just opening the top gives you almost 3 times the open space for inflow.

The only difference is the direction of airflow. Opening the filter access exposes the top pleat of the filter, which fills about half the opening and would take most of the airflow, whereas the deckplate is a nice distance from the filter that gives air a chance to disperse across the entire face of the filter pleats fairly uniformly.

But you can't beat a free, 5-second mod. to see what happens, and in California, we have to pass smog inspections every other year. A hacked airbox could be caught as part of ther visual inspection, and I am interested to hear if any other California folks have experience with this.
