Hey TW, so I have an 2008 TT TRD sport crew cab, 4x4, 3"lift 285/70/17 tire size . V6. I filled up the tank 17.6g and got about 200 miles for that tank. ~-12mpg. Let me know what you think on what I should be getting or how to get more out of my tank.
    Thx TW-

Driving a giant brick with heavy 33" tires will cause bad mileage. I think stock my 2nd gen would get around 17mpg. Not hard to believe that a lift and +2 size tires would knock a few off. Especially when the truck is 10 years old.

I have 285's and a good amount of lift and when I BABY the thing around town I get about 14... 100% highway at 65mph I can get 17, but as soon as I cruise at like 75-80 it drops back down to about 15.5.
For normal mixed driving my average is about 15mpg.

And you are calculating mpg by miles drivin/gal. It took to fill at the pump?

You also have fiberglass up front, that will scoop up air = drag.

I'd just say to try to drive reeaaallllyyyyy sllooowwww. Accelerate at 1500-2000 rpm, and don't pass people, ever ;)

I have about the same set up, 07 4 door 4x4, 4" lift 285/70/17. I also have a witch up front, just drove to Tahoe and back with full load of people and gear there and back got about 285 miles out of the tank. I ran the numbers and I got about 16.5 mpg, but that is with going up steep hills. I have k&n drop in, flow master exhaust and programer for more low end torque.

I just calculated it from when the fuel light came on. I put ~ 17.6 g and when the fuel light came back on the milage said 200. So 11.36 mpg. Shittig.... I expected 15-18. So with no tow to get what I'm getting is rough.

If you're reading the mileage from the odometer, don't forget you need to factor in the 33" tires...If it says you went 200 mi, you may have actually gone 220ish (not sure about the 33s). If you checkout the tire size calculator on TW, put in the original OEM size tires and you're current size, it'll tell you how much more you need to factor in.

Going from stock 265/70R16s to 285/70R17s will effect your mileage by 6.9%, so 11.36 MPG is actually 12.15 MPG.

To be honest, that doesn't sound that far off what one would expect from your setup. I get 13 MPG (mostly city driving, short commutes) and I'm on 265/75R16s and stock height. I'll be doing spark plugs soon as they're nearly 60K over their change interval..I'm hoping to achieve 15-16 MPG city.

True, at the end of the day, these engine are actually great at what they do, decent power, weight, and durability. But Fuel consumption is not one of those good factors.

Let's not get into the "it's a truck, if you wanted 30 MPGs, should'a got a Camry".

EPA rates the 4wd automatic Tacoma at 16 City/20 Hwy.

Every vehicle I've ever owned (30+)...and that was new enough for an EPA estimate...at least achieved that estimate when driving normally and unmodified, if not exceeded it by 10-20%. EPA estimates, of recent years at least, are relatively conservative as shit hits the fan when they're optimistic and consumers complain and sue over under-performing real world stats.

If Tacoyoda thinks his is a bit lower than expected, let's try to either confirm it's realistic enough for his mods or enlighten a fellow member on how he can try to improve, either by known MPG killers on the trucks or ask more questions about things like:

    Tune up
    Tire inflation
    Lube chassis
    Fresh fluids
    Aerodynamics
    Lift kits
Tire and wheel or rotating mass
    Hood scoop
    Bed covers
    etc.
