Bakflip MX4 Prelim Review

So I am about to pull the trigger on an Bakflip mx4 but don't really want to deal with leaking, I live in Miami, FL and it rains a lot here.

Does anybody have another cover they suggest that will not leak? Please help me out.

 

I think with the side rails the way they are you will have the same issue with any cover. Unless you go with a hard fibreglass cover that doesn't fold and overlaps the sides.

I say get it and seal it up like some have on here.

 

I think I am leaning towards the Undercover Elite.

 

I live in delray beach, fl so I can tell you, if it's rain and leak protection you want then look no further. The undercover elite or any of their full coverage tops will do the job and they are as strong as they claim, at least I can say that about the elite, but I imagine the others are just the same as they have the same coverage and materials. The only difference between them is features and looks.

Don't fall into the trap of the folding ones, like 61ragtop mentioned, the rail design makes it tough for those types. Also my bakflip leaked at the seams too, not just the rail seals. Those raised bumps on the rails channel water into the bed lol, if you want to go bananas and add sealant with the seals provided it will work as long as you don't get a defective one where the seams leak.

If you want a Hassel free life get the undercover elite, classic, or se. There are 2 spots inside or outside if you prefer in the upper truck bed corners at the bulkhead. Seal up those and you will be water tight. Once you put on the cover close yourself in and look for light at the corners to easily identify them

I forgot about that one lol, the ridgelander is a hot one, a little outside of my budget so I had to pass on it unfortunately, but it is pretty ideal. The elite was also outside of my budget, but I made an exception because of the excellent locking mechanism

 

Agreed...may be out of my budget also. I am waiting for wholesale pricing from a friend. Can you post a picture of your elite on your truck from different angles. It would be great.

I Pulled the trigger on the BAKFLIP MX4 based purely on the look and ease of operation. The issues I read about water getting in did scare me however most tonneau covers I have read about do not seem to be completely water proof. I learned enough from other guys on this forum that water intrusion in fixable. I had a local shop "Audio Works" order and install the cover in less than 24 hours from time of contact with them. A co-worker recommended them and they did the deal for $899 installed. They didn't drill holes into the composite bed because I was not sure where I wanted to run them. I may choose to use the kits black tubes and them directly to the sides a few inches below the top so there is less of a chance of tubes interfering with cargo. I carry two "Big Larry" LED flash lights with built in magnets so they work perfect when the cover in flipped up since the bed light is of no use now. The front corners of the bed have flat corners that serve as perfect mounting locations for the bad boys.
As soon as I got home I climbed inside and observed light visible in the both front corners. I used the listed black 100% water proof and flexible silicone purchased from Home Depot and pumped a generous amount into the crevices. The top rear corners where the tailgate connects to the bed also had light shining through. I ordered a tailgate seal kit from Amazon and plan on installing same when it arrives. I will post the results when its gets it first car wash or heavy rain. So far I love the way this cover functions and I believe it will serve my needs. I like the low profile look, heavy duty aluminum construction, ability to be removed in seconds, soft pads to protect the cab and window, Prop rods for security and ability to lock cargo using the tailgate check most of my boxes.

 

The looks of the bakflip covers are really nice, also the 90% full use of bed is a great feature.(they advertise full bed, but trust me, you put something in there like a couch or something big and it will push on it. I'm not certain what kind of abuse they can take. The bakflip fibermax didn't work out for me, too much hassle to make it water tight, and I got one with bad seams too. It was not meant to be and I really wanted it to be. After that I didn't want to get another because I was worried that it may have issues as well.

If you get one that passes QC properly and do as other reviewers did by putting silicone in areas that leak you will have a nice looking cover with good function. Just watch what you put in your truck bed and if you need to remove it for hauling something serious you will undo your silicone job in most areas and have to redo it again.

Undercover comes off in seconds if I need to haul something big, which is great if i know before hand that I will need it off. The drawback is if I want to spontaneously get something I find I am limited in vertical space. I would have to drive to somewhere to safely store it, then go back and get the prize. I mainly needed something watertight without the hassle. I travel a bit and need a dry place for my shiz. But there is no denying the nice look of the folding bakflips.

Realistically the undercover elite comes off in seconds?

 

Elite! Wished I would of instead of this TruXedo Lo Pro.

 

Yep, just 2 star knobs and it is off. If you have a large wingspan you can take it off solo, if not I would grab a helper. It doesn't weigh too much

So just to confirm... cover can't be opened without popping the tail gate down, correct. Not a big deal but only thing that's keeping me from trading my Retrax MX straight up, lol.

Installed the talgate seal kit and pumped some black sealant into the upper front corners to fill some gaps where water could enter. I decided to route my drain tubes on the sides using the tubes that came with the kit. I'm not sure if I installed the seal kit properly however it went on great and it looks like it's going to do the job by keeping water out of the bed. I will update the results as soon as I get a chance to test it.
