Machined Ring for Hilux Lighted 4x4 switch!!

@nudavinci64 If you are handy with electrical there isn't much to the lighting circuit on these...

1 x Resistor (red)
1 x Diode (yellow)
3 x LED (blue)

That's a picture of the inside of a Hilux switch.

 

I wired it back up with it separated and yes the HVAC lights up but the switch does not. Switch works but the lights do not. *sigh*

 

I am guessing this is what may have happen. I was not thinking when I shrink wrapped the wires so they were touching and probably shorted the little guys. May have to try and pull it apart as returning it may be more hassle.

 

@nazlax10 I heard you may have an a Helux switching up for sale? The ebay seller said to send it back to him. Not quite sure if he is going to replace or refund as his English doesn't make sense but may be in the market for replacement.

 

Might be down to go that route. Ebay seller said to return it so going to try that route first. Too bad I have it all torn apart waiting to be put in.

 

Anyone know the best or cheap way to return this switch to Thailand? Sometimes buying shit off ebay is a pain if you have to return. USPS is almost as much as the switch.

 

Yeah I've hit that problem before too and hate it. Return shipping can cost pretty much the value of the product itself and even then it would be up to the original sender whether they will actually cover a refund or not. Sometimes it's just better to either scrap it, or try and fix whatever the problem is yourself.

If you know how to solder you can replace everything I listed above for probably like $5. If the problem is in the switch it will be one of those things.

I am curious though... When you did that last battery test to try and light up the switch did you have the red wires disconnected from the green and green with white wires? That's how I would have tested is with the switch hooked up to nothing but the battery you are using to try and power it.

 

I tried with it disconnected from the green wires and without. The last test was connected and the HVAC lights turn on but the switch does not. I have come to the decision the switch is done. Shipping is $22 to return it.

@nazlax10 was offering to solder LEDs for people wanting different colors, you should ask him to just change the blown ones out. I'd opt to do that before sending it back to Thailand.

Unrelated but related question. Since I am out a Helux switch for now I hooked back up the HVAC but the LEDs are dull now in the entire unit. Any idea what could be doing on here? They light up but they are faint.

Got mine setup. Does not light up but die to a gremlins bug. Been all over it and re wired countless times and it won't light up. The main HVAC unit is also very dim. It does light up via 9volt battery so I know the LeDS are sounds. It appears iv not getting th solid 12v going to the area. I'm stumped there.

Quick photo of the setup. If folks do not want to use a glue or aduehisive I used electrical tape and wrapped to around a few times and wedge it in. Works pretty good. Hit the desert with otbover the weekend and it held up well. I did his as I was debating on a diff color for the ring.

 

Run temporary power and ground wires to see if the problem is with your existing wiring. This will at least allow you to start troubleshooting the problem. My money is on a loose pin on one of the connectors. Either that or you have wire that is damaged inside that looks fine but is not.

 

I have checked it via 9v and they power up so I know the switch and HVAC work. I had to replace my connector and a few wires when I accidentally cut a couple too short. (problem was happening before hand). I then rewired the spliced cables and crimped them again and it still does not work. I checked the fuses and that is not the issue. I was chatting it up with @nazlax10 &@Up2NoGood who tried to help and its at a point where I need get a voltage meter out and test around. My guess it is something to do with the 12v power. There appears to be some power coming through but its faint for the HVAC and you can slightly see it dim when the dimmer is used.

In short it has to be something with the existing wiring. I may splice in before on the main power wires and try a temporary power as you noted to see if it lights up. A bit annoying at this point. Its so close.

 

I think the brightness of the HVAC lights is controlled by a variable ground, so I would check the ground wire (green/white wire) and make sure its getting good contact and not seeing increased resistance from bad solders or crimps.

 

I thought that was the issue so I re did all the wiring and replaced some soldered pieces with crimped pieces. HVAC doesn't get bright and the Helix switch doesn't do anything.

 

If you can jumper the HVAC ground wire directly to a ground, and it lights up full brightness, then you have a bad connection causing the dimness. Everything else is normal brightness, like speedo gauge cluster, and other lighted switches (other than the Hilux)?

 

Yah it is only the HVAC panel that is dimly lit. The Helux does not light up at all. When tested directly with a 9v it lights up as expected. I was testing this on the wires in the wire setup. I re did crimped the setup twice without success. Maybe even a third time. I need to see where I can test the ground as noted and see how it goes.

Here you go man! This is a write up I did for a dash clock install, but the wiring is the exact same. Just run it to your factory 4x4 plug and insert the terminals into the open slots. If the light doesn't work initially swap the wires that you added and try again. Polarity matters since it's LEDs. Let me know if you have any more questions and good luck!
