Nothing wrong with going alone as long as you're prepared. Shit does happen, but in this case it wasn't a life or death situation.

Solo trips are an amazing thing.

Me too. It helps clear my mind from the rat race of a world that I live in.
I'm hoping to go out on a long trip sometime this year.
I gotta rethink my comm situation though.

Yeah I would agree there's security with a group. As long as you're ready to backpack out of a place and someone knows you're route I think safety issues are minimal.

X2... I got 2 non-member friends convinced to get HAM operator licenses last night. Today I'll find some study materials & watch those Youtube vides mentioned before. I may find some time to work but not very likely unless my boss unplugs my internet :anonymous:

    I'm gonna do the same.
My brother is deep into this HAM thing. It's gotten to a point where he's now part of his little town's emergency response/comm team.
This thread just convinced me of the value of HAM radio.

So all this ham talk has got me hooked on wanting a legit setup and taking the test etc.

Upon looking into it I've made the conclusion that I will be reading about ham setups to understand for a very...very... long time :bananadead:

Oh yes, lots of help online for the test.

Mainly interested in learning about all the types of setups, how they work, what those messages you sent him were, something about a signal booster, repeaters, etc

Have many longs nights ahead :anonymous:

yes plenty of reading. but worth it. Some of it won't make sense until you do it. One of the best things is to use that website to study. Get your Tech license. Then find local people to help you with things. HAMs are almost always eager to share stuff and teach.

    It is hamradiotestonline.com or hamradiolicenseexam.com

Also @snowboard704 , there is a great PDF study guide at www.kb6nu.com that I downloaded and printed off.

I need to study some more so I can hopefully go take the test this Sunday at my local ARC

So as with many, I am just now starting to look into this HAM idea. I've always thrown around the idea of getting a good com system for the truck for trails/emergency. Seems relatively reasonable. Are there any other comparable options? If we are all praising this idea, why did it fail in this situation?

I don't want to drop a ton of money into it, but if it offers a good emergency plan for a reasonable cost, I am not opposed.

I like solo trips. The most dangerous situations I've been in hiking and climbing were caused by people I was with, so companions need to be selected carefully.

I'm contemplating getting a HAM license, I took a practice test and got 80%, passing I believe. I paid attention in physics class so I know that stuff, I didn't know some of the procedural stuff. One of the places I go has D-Star repeaters so I need a $500 (last time I checked) radio, not in the budget yet.

Too much to list, but enough to get me in trouble. Repeatedly.
    Home. Time for some sleep.
Then find out why I lost rear brakes.

Covered in stickers and chrome stick-ons for extra horse torques and foot powers. Icon sticker gets me tons of travel, dozens of milimeters.

There will be way more Analog repeaters then DSTAR repeaters anyways so you don't NEED a DSTAR Radio. APRS Digipeaters are everywhere too.

Plus there is still the ongoing battle in HAM world over digital formats. Right now DSTAR Appears to be winning but Fusion, PL20 and DMR still have foot holds.

I have a DSTAR Radio and love DSTARs added features. But the infustruce just isn't there especially out west...yet. No need to commit to a digital format yet just get an analog one for starters.

You should either read the whole thread or elaborate on that.
