Using Crawl Control ended up costing me $1100 in broken parts.

Sorry about your luck but appreciate the heads up in case I'm in a similar situation

 

This has me perplexed. Originally I assumed that the sand was pushed through those holes in his skid plate but that nipple on the actuator is well behind the openings...by at least a foot. Unless sand was packed in there like a brick, I can't see how that nipple broke off.

And whoever stated it before is correct and I was wrong. That nipple is just a vent. It runs up to a vented cap just below and to the side of the battery. The actuator is fully electric.

Seems like the actuator should have worked even w the nipple broken off.

Now I'm seriously wondering what we're missing from the story.

Did the dealer give him a line of BS or was there much more involved than just getting stuck and using CRAWL?

That's total BS man. From what your describing, I'd contact corporate and explain what happened. They would probably make things right.

 

So let me get this straight....
Your off-road truck broke by being used off of the road? I wouldn't consider playing in the sand "severe off roading" personally.
As others have said Toyota themselves show multiple videos of crawl mode pulling you out of the sand.

I guess another fan boy argument is out the window? Normally if you point out a problem with the Turd-gen all the fan boys are quick to mention that "its a truck" or " its for off-roading" but apparently its not. At least not in the real world anyways.
I get that this MAY be a special situation or a fluke but even the die hard fan boys should look in the mirror and admit its a shitty design. Enjoy your truck that suddenly isn't much better off road that a ridgeline ROFL.

 

Gotta pay to play sometimes. If you do take your truck offroad, occasionally shit breaks. That said, I totally agree that the marketing may be a little disingenuous if they are promoting multi terrain select and crawl control as key features of the truck and then expecting buyers to not use it as intended. Hope the fab guys can come up with something for this situation.

Its no different then the Corvette. GM shows the Corvette on a race track in its commercials, but if you break it racing, they're not going to cover it under warranty. It's abuse. Yes it has the cool crawl control feature, but you still have to use your head and realize that things could break if you bury your truck to the frame rails in sand.

If a module had failed I'm sure the dealer would have warrantied it, but since it was broken from outside forces, its no longer a warranty issue.

 

If his exhaust got damaged instead would this even be a discussion? See what I did there?

 

I'm not sure if this has been pointed out, but that line is not a vacuum line. It's a breather hose. The actuator is electronic. There is a small electric motor in there (about the size of an RC motor). Breaking that hose of would be nothing but let sand and water inside the cover that might foul up the motor. You can buy a new actuator on ebay for about $200 and it's an easy install.

Sounds like operator error. That vacuum unit was damn dirty. Obviously more to the story.

Sand is easy to navigate in. Just drop tire pressure, and give it gas.
