That's some funny shi* right there!!! LOL!!! I truly can see and believe that one!!!:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

Btw, THAT is some pretty damn good distance there as well!!! I'm JUST SAY'N people, in this situation, if you have a HAM license, you can connect to the 2m repeater near and/or around Cuyamaca with your handhelds (HIGHLY likely) and eventually to some other "station", the other HAM user being the "other station". Of course, IF you're in the canyons it would be difficult and that goes for just about any radio comms either way due to the canyon walls. When it that situation, going to say, 70cm (400MHz) freq band MAY HELP with "tight cornering situations" (i.e. obstructions/mazes such as being in a building, for example. Something to think about).

*cough* AHEM!!! *clears throat* Another situation where a HAM license comes in handy due to lack of communications whether by cell or non-licensed HAM!!! Just say'n!!! :notsure: Use a CB for shorter range, trail type, communications so you don't have to "follow HAM rules" everytime. Not only that, always good to have back-up comms either way.

I'll admit I haven't read the thread yet and will, but just basing my comments on what I am solely seeing here.

Okay, I know what you guys are about to say, LOL!!! :crapstorm::violent:

I apologize for my stupidity here. I was speaking in general terms overall. I knew Greg has a license, but will admit I didn't know Shane's setup. Again, I was speaking more or less in general terms for everyones and/or just about everyones setup for radio comms. All that know me know that I like having different forms of comms mainly for back-up reasons or for the simple fact that not everyone has CB and not everyone has HAM. Both are relatively inexpensive, so why not get both types? I even have a scanner in my truck so I can, at the very least, monitor just about ALL frequencies, including CB. The scanner actually came in handy the last time I went to Anza. I was able to monitor the HAM freq they were using and then communicate with Nick on the CB because my batt died on my Baofeng.

Anyways, again, I apologize as I was just speaking, more or less, in general terms and for anyones safety for future incidents. In my humble opinion, and I may be wrong, but the OP didn't have any comms and this should never be the case? I just finished reading the whole thread and there was no mentions of comms other than Greg and Shane?! Solo or not, you know the area good or not, shi* WILL go wrong when least expected (i.e. I'm talking about the OP and/or solo hikers being fairly far out... but hey, that is my own humble opinion on the matter)!!! I NEVER EVER rely on cell phone out in middle of BFE as the thing is just as good as the rock next to me!!! LOL!!! If I'm good enough, throw the cell phone about 50-60yds, walk to it, pick it up and say, "can you hear me now?" REPEAT PROCESS!!! LMAO!!!

Reason i started putting my Boefeng im my pack when go out in the dirt bikes. We usually go on 2 or 3hr rides and end up far from camp. During season OW is usually pretty well packed so getting ahold of someone in an emergency has pretty good odds.

Just saying, I have my HAM mobile and CB connected to "constant power" and I recommend this for anyones setup, my humble opinion again. The shi**y part of it, you have to remember to turn it off, LOL!!! I left my CB turned ON one time. I was parked next to my sisters car while we were visiting our mom at the hospital, my sister goes back out to her car to get something while I was inside the hospital, and my sister hears "voices" coming from my truck???!!! LMFAO!!! She tells me about what had just happened and it freaked her out and I started laughing saying, "oh shi*, my CB must still be ON?!" I was at the hospital by that time for just over maybe +4hrs, LOL!!! Didn't bother the vehicle battery though. The units are relatively "low power consumption" when just "ON".

where do you have your HAM mounted? I just picked up a unit to permanently hard wire but I need ideas about mounting areas. I may return it for a smaller unit but Im not sure about using a HAM with out a cooling fan.
