Still glass. They need to be for best optical quality and scratch resistance. Cost is low because flat and just cut to size from large sheets from supplier/ vendor.

Maybe the camper top has something to do with water drainage? :notsure:

Makes sense. Those little plastic mirrors suck. Thanks I'll keep applying rain x to my mirrors lol.

This happens to mine when the roads are wet but it's not actually raining. I think it has to do with road spray and the wind generated by the truck. The shell changes the aerodynamics, which could contribute to less camera spotting?

You are correct... look at the aero model and the CFD graph based on a pickup truck.

I have it happen in rain and snow. My foolproof method of solving this is running my finger over the camera every time I stop. Doesn't help when I pull in somewhere to back in but it works for backing out of spots after running into the grocery store.

I searched to see what photographers are doing. Apparently they're using a wipe or licking their lense. And late 2015 a company called tonika started making lenses (which won't help us) with a coating that disperse water rather than trying to get it to bead and run off resulting in a clear picture.

We are probably sol until some sort of water dispersing spray is developed or a cool tailgate spoiler comes along.

    Great cyber sleuth!
I'm thinking there has to be a type of wax available for this in the market. Any wax? Just make sure it's plastic safe.

Wax works well on making water bead up as it changes the surface tension and allows water to collect in a droplet. That droplet should be heavy enough to just fall off the lens as it's upside down and nearly 45 degree angle.

True. Rain x for plastic might be worth trying?

I think so. Didn't know they had plastic specific formula.

Jesus.... get out of your truck and wipe off the backup camera like the rest of us who drive cars with cameras.

You should lick the camera instead. That way you get the water off AND keep it from fogging up and less chance of scratching your lense.

After I bought my truck, the salesman mentioned that when we going over the walkthrough.
Said every time you walk by just wipe the lens. I didn't think too much of it, because I've never had a back up camera before.
After having one now, it does make a difference.

Every car i've owned with a backup camera gets dirty the moment you drive in wet/snowy conditions.

You'd think they would come up with a tiny wiper for it, but yeah, I get out and wipe it down if I really need to use it.

F@cking 3rd gen issues again!? So now we need micro wiper and a rotating camera when the tailgate is down? Wait, it will probably need to be motorized too!!! Too much work to wipe or rotate backup camera.

    :angrygirl: :bananadead:

Why does Toyota make us do so much work?
