OEM CV Axle Cost

Hey Dudes,

Do you guys have any idea why OEM Tacoma CV axles are so expensive? I just priced theses for a guy I work with and they are around $425-450. When comparing to the cost for OEM CV axles for a 3rd Gen 4runner, it's a huge difference. I could buy new OEM axles for my 3rd Gen for around $150/each. When looking at them, they looked very much like the ones on my 3rd Gen 4runner so I'm finding it hard to believe it costs $300 more to manufacture these.

Any ideas why Toyota has decided to bend you guys over for CV axles?

 

I think it's like printer ink.They keep jacking the prices of replacement parts hoping you will give and get a newer model.Plus they know theres enough Toyota purist that will spread'em and take it

 

Pretty sure 3rd gen 4Runner CVs, and most other suspension related components for the front end, are totally interchangeable with the 1st Gen Tacoma.

If the dealer is charging 3x more for the same part number just because you entered "tacoma" into the parts search instead of 4runner, then the dealer is being a real asshole and just seeing what they can get away with.

They don't have the same part number within Toyota's system.

These are retail prices. I'm sure you can find them from an online dealer in the 400 range.

 

That's what I use and as long as you don't jack the hell out of your pickup and make the boot ribs rub you shouldn't have a problem. Mine have gone many thousands of miles with no issue. Good price to.

 

They are the same. But really you could just fly with autozone/napa and be fine unless your really wheeling the rig

 

Well that's dumb, I'm looking at Toyota of Dallas and an entire axle assembly for the 4Runner is $150 (reman tho). Even though the part numbers are not the same I have not heard any reports that these aren't compatible with the Tacoma.

Also, the axle assembly for the Tacoma is ironically "discontinued"

 

That's crazy, must be a surplus of them they need to move.

 

It's because they want the die-hard 1st gen guys to quit fixing them and lease a brand new one for 399 or whatever they are trying to slang at yota

I'm thinking he'll just buy some Napa CV axles unless we can find an OEM set on a wrecked Tacoma at a Pick and Pull that we could reboot. I would reboot his OEM ones, but both boots are ripped on each axle and there's no grease left anywhere so it definitely wouldn't be smart to spend money on axles that have received that sort of abuse. He has no idea how long they've been ripped.

 

Yep, aftermarket sellers are listing the Toyota part numbers for the 3rd Gen 4runner and 1st Gen Tacoma as fitting the same CV axle.

 

Good to know you can run the 4runners cv joint. Hell, I oughtta buy one just to have on hand. That's an amazing price for an OEM CV shaft.

 

It's reman... so who knows if they're any good.

I was just getting ready to do some CVJ Remans and found this. So is the consensus that the 3rd gen 4Runner and First gen Taco are the same? Specifically I have an '01 4x4.

 

Yeah, nah. Misunderstanding, I gotcha.

 

This is what I'm coming across. Same part numbers. Trying to do some digging to see if I can find OEM lengths for each. Would be nice to buy some OEM without the core for cheap and rebuild mine as backups. Will post back if I can find some specs.
