That's what I'm doing for next year. I'm selling that beast this year and getting something smaller. I'm 27' from plow to back bumper. I had it for the business, but shut that down so I now longer need something that big.

Blew a rear shock the other day.

Was thinking the weird noise I was hearing was ice somewhere, but yesterday I realized it happens when the back wheel hits. Driver's side rear shock was covered in sand, so it must have lost all of its oil. I have a feeling I over-extended them a few times. If I got a wheel off the ground, it felt/sounded like the shock was hitting its end before the axle dropped as far as it normally could. 5100s are supposed to be good for 1.5" and that's about what the General springs I have in the rear give me, but I'm wondering if I should go with 5125s this time.

That said, those rear shocks do have 40k or so on them and the dust boots have been in bad shape for a while, so it could just be that sand compromised the seals.

You can get the 5125s in different lengths, they are probably the way to go. Is the back end really bouncy, especially on the highway? If so it's blown. If not some oil leakage is normal per Bilstein.

However the best thing to do is flex the truck and measure what you actually need as each truck is different

It's hard to tell for sure because of the bad weather today (can't drive too fast, snow filling in the bumps), but it doesn't feel as stiff as it was. One shock is totally clean, the other is completely covered in sand. I hear a soft thud noise from that side every time the back end rebounds from a bump.

Other thing I could do is get OMEs. Looks like their rears extend slightly further than the 5100s. I don't think I need much more than I have. I might actually be okay with regular 5100s by now as the springs settled--haven't had the over-extension feeling recently. I'll have to measure it again.

Only counts if you actually use it. Based on your previous posts, it sounds like it's rusted and dented just from being tossed around your garage :stirthepot:
If it's from over-extension, you're not the first person that's happened to. They say they're good for slightly lifted applications but people have had issues with them blowing out from over extension. If you go longer, make sure you hit the bump stops before you bottom out the shock, that would be bad.

Snow just started about 30-45 minutes ago at work. It's already coated the ground, going to suck cleaning the truck out later on.

I'm not 100% sure it is over-extension because it seems like it would have happened a long time ago. Yet, I made it 40k.

I'd love to just buy 5100s again and be done with it, since it's cheap and simple and I don't have to worry about anything else.

We had 3/16"- 1/4" on everything yesterday morning in Franklin county MA. Getting hit hard with the snow now, I would say we are in the 2"/hr range now.
