They're still going strong-ish in rural SC. They closed half a dozen stores last year but I know certain stores are still local staples.

They're still popular in Alabama. Not sure they still carry 3 liters of Pepsi though. That shit blew my mind as a kid. THREE LITERS?!

    Long or short bed?

Tempted to give mine away. I hate the thing. I want to light it on fire every time I have to use it.

Why do you hate it's guts and want it to die?

Genuinely curious. All I've got on my truck is a metal bed cover that was on when I bought it and the price difference between a soft topper and a canopy... well let's just say I'm looking at soft toppers.

I bought my used Bestop Supertop off of Craigslist for 250$. Granted I had to drive 100 miles each way to get it. Deals are out there if you can find them

I got mine because I don't have storage space in my current living arrangement for a fiberglass top. And I can't install a lift for the roof. But I ideally wanted a fiberglass topper.

Settled for the Softopper and think it looks really cool on the Taco. I got the tan color.

Disclaimer: I was in a bad car accident in '15. Had rotator cuff surgery in '16. My handicap with this might be why I find the cap so hard to use.

    Why I dislike it:
It requires two people to put on and off. The canvas is heavy and hard to put on the rails from underneith.

The topper only stays up when the canvas is snapped into the sides. So the whole thing is collapsed while you are in the bed of the truck putting the canvas on.

The actual rails need two people to snap in to avoid causing paint damage to the sides of the bed.

Over all just a constant pain in the butt. Takes way too much work and time to get it on. Now I do completely take it down because I can't store it any other way. If you can store it with the canvas always on the rails, it would make it alot easier.

Also there is a metal bar that goes across the tailgate that snaps in and out to help reinforce the sides. I didn't know this when I bought it because it never shows in pictures. It gets in my way. Don't care for that.

The topper itself is great. I get no leaking in the rain. It does wrinkle but it comes out over time in the sun. Its very sturdy. Stays clean which is a bonus.

So my hatred is purely for assembly.

It also has visibility limitations so use caution. This may or may not be my truck :anonymous:.

The Bestop doesnt use snaps, which should make it MUCH easier to use. I can switch between my tonneau and Bestop in about 45 minutes. Takes about 5 minutes to fold down and back up.

The Softopper new is only $700. If youre budget is $600, I would spend the extra $100 so you get a warranty. Just my 2cents.

Ah, so you didn't leave it on all the time, that's it right?

I can see why putting it together and taking it apart a bunch would be a pain. I'm not a fan of pitching tents unless they are for backpacking so dealing with heavy canvas would suck, I get it.

I think if I left it on all the time then it would be a suitable alternative to the heavily used and abused tonneau cover I've got. Just need to save them pennies...

I got mine on Craigslist, damn near new for $100 from a Chevy Colorado. Just had to buy new brackets ($25). The thing about craigslist is be smart. Meet in a public place, away from your house, and only bring the cash you plan on paying. Even meet away from your truck if you can and walk in.

If you conceal carry(legally), that's another option too.
