Damn, well.....maybe that's the prelude to spindle snapping? I wonder if that small section breaking leads to complete failure for the main riser?

I plan on preheating the entire spindle, then MIG the entire thing, then wrapping it to let it cool slowly. Seems like the best way to keep from getting hydrogen cracks and weld brittleness.

There certainly seems to be quite a bit of movement right at that location. Otherwise the gusset itself would not have cracked.

Too lazy to find all the quotes but it was being tracked in a different thread.

It certainly looks like they are flexing. And the gusset stiffens it right at the hub. Plus the hardening effect of welding, and you end up with a stress fracture.

This is why I tell everyone to get the sway bar version of the gusset. You have triple the weld surface at the hub.

Now I need to go through your build to see how you are making them work with the LT set up. And no spacers IIRC.

I didn't have to do anything extra. Weld then on and put it back together. Obviously I have no sway bar, but the price difference between the two gussets is less than $20. It's a no brainer.

I will say with 35x12.50's and a wheel with 4.75" backspacing, the tire is pretty close to the spindle gusset. But it clears just enough (by about 1/4-1/2" at 5 psi).

Does your tire tub the UCA though?
I know it's different with mt but my 4.5" bs rubs the uca with 35s

TC says you need to run spacers with wheels with more than stock backspacing.

Good to know. Now I need to order the sway bar version gussets.

I don't think anyone runs wheels with more than stock bs ?

Stock BS is 3.5" IIRC. Mine are 4.75"

Stock back spacing is 5.5" or 5.25"
4.5" BS gives you about one more inch of clearance away from the spindle and UCA, 3.5" BS would give you 2" more clearance and so on...

    What eccracer said is correct

If it was 3.5 the stock wheels would stick WAY out

Most people use 2m or 70cm up here in Washington. Plenty of 2m repeaters around. You can get a nice 2m I-com mobile rig for under $200 or spend another 150 and get a dual band to give you more channels. Go get your tech license. It's not too hard at all and join ths hams club. Ham is night and day over cb. I wish more people used it offroad.

There is an app on you can get for your phone that has all the questions and answers. Literally all of them
