I'll tell you when I get a new head unit. You can't blast anything with a stock head unit. I max out my volume when using my phone almost all the time. Not blasting level.

True but its really like an actual new truck afterwards. Or seek one out that has a good frame or even one that has had it replaced already...

 

I guess i kinda get that but it would have been completely free and woulda upped the sale price significantly. People pay stupid prices for these old ass trucks! Which drives me fuckin nuts because they certainly arent worth what they go for because of all the doorks paying way too much has driven the prices so high...

Oh also all suspension and basically everything bolted to it besides the body is also included in the frame swap...free...

We have zero rust issues in my region and aren't even qualified to be under the program but man i could imagine id be one happy camper to be getting a new frame.after major rust problems. I really feel for you guys that have had to deal with that crap, especially the guys that fucked off the inspection in time or didnt look for it when buying one then getting fucked and hell there are tons of people that have no idea of the rust or the program to this day that still drive around clueless lol. I guess most of those scenarios are self inflicted basically, but still, to have to deal with that would kill me. Especially since its really a death sentence for the vehicle. Then to do it outta pocket is more than its worth in most cases so that not much of an option....im also so thankful we dont salt our roads, that would infuriate me. Especially when its not needed! There are other options!

 

So you have to turn the camera on to use it or does it also turn on when put in reverse like stock ones?

 

Why do you think the recall would be void? If anything, a toyota dealership would see it as an easy way to make a few extra $$, since there would be a heck of a lot less labor involved in the frame swap if the owner had already done most of the work. Further, US law prohibits manufacturers from voiding warranties/recalls unless they are able to prove that the problem was *caused* by the owner. The fact that something has been taken apart is irrelevant, since doing that, OBVIOUSLY, didn't cause the frame to rust out.

It now turns on automatically when I shift into reverse, but I can still turn it on when I'm in drive, actually moving, or just parked.

Ok, so here is the thing... you should NOT be looking forward (at mirrors or backup camera screen) to back up typically. You twist yourself around and LOOK STRAIGHT OUT THE BACK WINDOW. It helps to grab the passenger side seat with your right hand. Steer with your left. If the seatbelt is a problem, that is OK, it is legal to remove the seatbelt while backing up.

Pickups are probably the *easiest* vehicle to back up, because you have a VERY CLEAR view of the corners of the vehicle.

You use the mirrors (side, not rear-center) to back up when the view out the back window is obstructed (i.e., cargo).

 

I DIDN'T

The owner I talked to did. And this truck was literally stripped down to nothing. Cab on frame, that was it! Doors, front sheet metal (fenders, hood, bumper), entire bed, engine, tranny, wheels axles, suspension, and entire interior. Plus it was torn apart by someone other than a trained Toyota tech.

 

Presumably, you don't know him, but if you do happen to bump into and talk to him, you might want to point out that none of this is relevant. The law states that the warranty/recall is valid regardless.

 

I have a really hard time telling where my back bumper is in relation to something I'm backing up to. Fortunately, I always think I'm right next to something when I have about 5 ft so I've never hit anything. The backup camera is really useful for that and for hitching a trailer.

 

Keep in mind I haven't actually backed into something in about a year. Also I got my eye muscle surgery and my range of vision has improved greatly, so I don't plan on having problems like this again.

One noteworthy incident I had was in January 2015. I pulled into a 15-minute free space on the street outside a store while my friend went inside for a few minutes. Unbeknownst to me, a Prius pulled in right behind me and the owner and wife got out without me knowing. It was dark and the last thing I was expected was for someone's car to be there. It had been a long day and I was dead set on just dropping my friend off and going home. My friend got in the truck, and I backed up. There was a Ford Escape parked in front of me, and if I'd simply turned the wheel left and pulled forward I would have scraped the Escape's left rear corner. I just blindly reversed into the Prius, and evne though I swore loudly on impact, the actual impact was so light that my friend didn't even realize I'd hit somebody. Owner of Prius was still there and was very calm, but asked "What's your deal?" He was not angry, but rather more shocked than I was that I'd hit his car. No damage to my truck or the Prius, so we just parted ways without exchanging insurance.

 

My dad's been driving for 40+ years, has a flawless driving record, and has had one minor accident almost 20 years ago that was his fault. A year or so ago he was leaving work, backed his Honda Pilot up, and it was dark out. His Pilot has a backup camera, and he was turning his head and while occasionally glancing at the camera screen. There was a lowboy flatbed big rig trailer right there that he didn't see. Backed into it at relatively low speed and smashed the left taillight. There was also a small dent in the rear fender and a paint chip. Damage was so minor that he just took it to the Honda dealer, had the paint damage touched up, and obviously had the taillight cover replaced.
