LMAO...Reminds of this one time we were coming back one night after a race in a 1 car and it started to drizzle on the way back. Panic set in and we pulled over to wrap that sucker up to keep it dry in this huge ass blue tarp. The tarp kept coming off and getting shredded by the wind, we had pulled over to reattach it. Repeat this cycle over and over until for the next 60 miles until we got home. The car was already turning orange by the time we got it off the trailer at 2 in the morning, took us about 2 hours with WD-40, steel wool and 3M pads to remove the rust.

All the cracks I'm see from the pictures posted aren't from lack of fusion, they appear to be from the gussets flexing at a different rate than the spindle, causing metal fatigue and cracking at the Haz. I personally wouldn't do the non sway bar gussets without adding a gusset from the gusset to the steering knuckle like this.









And the more I look at it the more I'd like to see the steering gusset tied into the actual spindle itself and not just the gusset.

 

I got my replacement motor from HBMurphy. While picking it up, we got to talking about spindle strength. He was telling me his team was the one that contacted Toyota for their tempering recipe. Apparently Toyota keeps that secret very close to their chest, so his team spent months working their way through until they got clearance to speak with the Toyota engineer who determined the proper recipe, who also told them the recipe for making them stronger. Had to sign a non-disclosure waiver and everything. Since then, no more bent spindles.
He could have been relaying info he heard from elsewhere, but it sure sounded like it was personally-known.

 

How much lift do I have to have to fit those shocks?

I'm sure you know this having done a few sets yourself, but the TC swaybar version gussets do this. There is a gusset tying the knuckle to the main spindle, and then the main gusset ties into that.

 

What I'd like to see is the Truck Shop ones with an added gusset for the steering knuckle.

 

Yeah I generally try to push the sway bar version to my customers, only time the older version is utilized is if they specifically ask for it, plan to run stock wheels, and aren't willing to utilize a wheel spacer. The non-sway bar gussets weren't even something I felt like it was worth using until I started getting a bunch of members asking for them

 

@jberry813 @glorifiedwelder Maybe I'm missing something.......Is there any benefit to having the steering extension on the gusset other than having a longer base for the gusset to be welded onto the spindle? It seems like "The Truck Stop" style would be plenty beefy even without the steering extension.

 

Yes. But I'm still going to put together a spares kit.

If you had Maxtrac's, this wouldn't be a problem.

 

X3, these with a gusset to the steering arm would be beef. Does The Truck Shop sell the gussets as a part, or just as a welded kit?
