I cannot control the foot lever. It hits a ratchet and locks. I don't have a hand brake. '13 Tacoma

Drove my granddads farm truck for a summer using only the pedal emergency brake (in the fields and down one gravel back road), locked a pair of vise grips on the relase pull so it was stuck out. When pulling the hay trailer you had to ride the pedal lightly for about 100 yards, kinda like stopping a train.

Simple test is see if you can move forward slightly with the brake partially applied; i.e. don't push down all the way.

BTW, is that a push-on/push-off or a push-on/handle-release? If the latter, sometime/somewhere that it's safe to do so, have a try with one hand holding the release open to prevent the release.

My '17 TRD OR has the handbrake lever in the middle style like my '02 4Runner did. I've had a couple foot pedal types and never much cared for them for the exact reason you identify.

Ok, that foot brake had a hand release. One hand and one foot, you can control that brake.
My Tacoma does not have that hand release. To release it, you press again all the way then it will come back up. (You all already know that, I know) Not a good idea in an EMERGENCY.

I have to to have it come up.

Eww. Sorry. Hate that style. Obviously there are plenty of other offsetting things of greatness about the '13 Taco, but that one just plain stinks.

Still, I can conceive of some situations where that kind of brake is better than NO BRAKES. I'd rather lock up the tail end and work on steering through it with a risk of hitting something at a slower speed than making the choice of accelerating into that stopped traffic or curve at the bottom of the hill! :D

Either way, as above, it's best thought of as a parking brake that you might use if you had no other choice in an emergency.

Ok, I will get back on topic now that I have vented my frustration. You all brought up BRAKES.

It's a work in progress. See my build thread.

Parked about 2.5-3 feet off the curb and the road is pretty narrow at that point

I wish, it parked there when the whole thing was open. I didn't take a pic of it last night because it was too dark.
