Sounds like the occasional glance at the backup camera probably distracted him from the trailer.

Didn't even know the trailer was there. It was dark and foggy and there was no lighting beyond the Pilot's taillights...

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that those trucks were in some type of an accident. Possibly of the unintentional kind. Unless they had a death wish.

I realize that it was unintentional, but I still don't get how it happens in the first place...

Never blow through a crosswalk while Wolverine is crossing the street! That's what the owner of this Taco learned the hard way.

Years ago I had a guy slide through a blind corner (going way too fast) hit me head on -ish. EMS had to cut the roof off the car to extract my passenger. She very nearly bled to death. The steering wheel was pushed up against the seat right next to me. I was soaked in my own blood so bad that my friends (the EMS responders) didn't recognize me - I looked worse than my actual injuries were. This shit can happen to you at any time out there. Always be alert and hope you have time to respond.

Yikes..similar thing happened to my mother long ago except she didn't get a scratch. Fortunately she drove a 1983 Olds Toronado.

    Hope your friend recovered!

Possibly the splatter pattern of the driver's fecal matter as the accident unfolded... Say... I wonder if they conduct CSI based on this type of splatter pattern...

Had a buddy that bought an old Willys Jeep that some dude had committed suicide in. He had driven into the high country in the early winter, blew his brains out, and was found after the spring thaw. Even after taking every single nonmetallic thing out of it, douching every surface with Clorox, and finishing up with a pressure washer there was still a nasty funk when it got hot. And the stains in the glass didn't leave. Nor did the occasional little tiny piece of unidentified something that made my skin crawl. Yeah, it can be CSId. :)
