Sticky Clutch Pedal

Took my truck in for the spring TSB today, fully expecting to be without it for tomorrow's 10"-12" expected snow storm. Big surprise, they had parts on hand and four hours later my truck is finished.

We had our first real cold snap a couple days ago and I experienced something really weird, my clutch pedal stuck against the floor. I had just hopped in and had made it to the light around the corner. It slowly released and I pulled away. Shifted into second and the pedal once again was super slow to release. I'm not talking about a release that was not quite as fast as my foot, but counting one banana, two banana, three banana; took three seconds for the pedal to come off the floor. Pulled over, let the truck warm up and it was fine. I've experienced this a couple times now, although I'm now waiting for the truck to warm up and testing the pedal before going anywhere.

The service guy said he'd look into it. Along with the call saying my truck was done, he said that he ordered parts to fix my clutch, didn't mention what parts and I presume it's no charge, otherwise he would have said something.

I know there's a TSB for a clutch squeak. I've never driven a truck that didn't have a squeak, but anyone else have this problem with a sticky clutch pedal? Could the service guy be performing that TSB hoping it will fix my problem?

 

I took my truck in a few weeks ago for the rear suspension TSB. I also had them replaced the clutch peddle. There's a TSB for 05 and 06. I have a 07, I told him what the problem was he just ordered a new clutch assy. It was all covered under warranty.

But a new clutch won't fix that. It just needs to warm up. I had the same thing happen here in Denver earlier this week. Was sticky, but was fine after 5 mins of driving.

Everything moves slower when it's cold. We had a few cold mornings recently (-6 or so) and mine did the same thing till it warmed up. If it persists after a warm-up or when it's not cold, then you have an issue.

 

My o7 does the same thing when its cold. I just let it warm up for a good 5 - 10 before I drive it when its really cold.

It probably has something to do with the fact that the tacos' clutch is hydraulic (it uses fluid) and not a cable.

 

Ok, another year has gone by and my clutch still sticks to the floor occasionally. Anyone think that Toyota has a pedal problem? Sticky accelerators, bad breaks; could they have a clutch pedal issue too?

The only pedal I stomp on is the clutch, and it doesn't want to come off the floor when I need it. Sounds like other stories I've been hearing on the news.

 

Checking in here with slow-returning clutch pedal. I've only noticed it when it's cold.

 

If it's an issue, then you probably need to find a clutch fluid that is better rated to the cold... honestly it's not a defect/flaw/ect... it's just simple mechanics.

 

had mine flushed and it 95% fixed the problem--that last 5 is because its still SLIGHTLY slower when its real cold out.

 

mine was doin the exact same thing. i told the dealership about it, they said it was just becuase of the cold. the greased the fork or whatever part it is that is accessible from behind the rubber boot on the tranny. that helped also. im not sure what clutch fluid would be better rated for the cold, do they make a brake fluid that is better rated for colder temps?

 

They do make synthetic brake fluid. Castrol GT LMA meets DOT3 and DOT4 brake fluid specs. I've never used it, but I'm sure it will help with the slow clutch pedal. When it's cold, the hydraulic fluid thickens up making the clutch cylinder harder to push. Synthetics flow better at cold temps, so I would assume that using synthetic brake fluid would help.

 

Ok, a hydraulic issue makes sense, but not at the temperatures I'm experiencing. Surely what came from the factory shouldn't be affected by last nights 28 degree weather. If it was -28 below like it was a month ago, I'd give my truck some more respect, but 28 in Wisconsin is short sleeve weather.

 

Sorry kinda new to tacoma world. I have a question. What does the TSB stand for and is it covered only under warranty or is it a recall. Thanks

 

TSB = toyota service bulletin. they are not a recall. usually its specified on the TSB document what warranty its covered under either the bumper to bumper or the powertrain

 

This is true. Neither of my other cars have this issue even down into the teens, and yes they are hydraulic clutches.

 

I'am having the same problems , summer/winter doent matter. about 4 months ago i changed my master cyliner and slave cylinder, and in return it work untill today . this is really scary at a red light when your clutch ingages on the floor.

 

Did you make sure to purge all the air out of the system?

 

yes sir, today on my way to work i lost all pedal thank god i was close. iam going to toyota tomorrow to get a new master cylinder true (oem) one and ill go drom there. I also noticed alot of oil like substance around the slave cylinder not sure on this yet.

 

i also noticed my fluid to be black , flustered. I cant complain much this will be the first time to twist a wrench on it.
