Been doing it that way for many years. If I told you how many you'd think I was really old. But, it's the only way to go.

It's really not that hard to take OT into account. I'm salaried on a base pay, but I also make commission that's paid once a month. It would be equivalent to your OT calculations.

Personally I enjoy my tax return each year. I'm one of those paycheck to paycheck people while my wife stays at home with the kids (job in itself) and living in an expensive county, so that check each year helps pay off credit or a vacation. I know if I adjust my withholding and get even I'll probably not notice the extra $100-200 in my check and become just another grocery trip or something else. Getting that big check at the end of the year helps me focus the money to more specific places. Plus I can't risk owing anything to the Feds.

    Same for me.

Hate tax time, unless I get a refund. I'd rather have $1k returned in a lump than $100 a month that will do nothing comparable to the larger, one time boost in cash flow.

It's hard for me to project. We do a lot of government work i.e. Military work and it's hard to tell how much o.t will be worked in any quarter.

We just had a project get moved up in January and I ended up working over 100 hours of o.t where as this month I'll probably only have 10 hours

Same as sales. You never know what's going to happen. I got a commission check that was equivalent to my annual salary once. It's just math and actually taking the time to make a change to your w4. That said, it can be tricky for companies stuck in the Stone Age. I can adjust mine online anytime I want.
Some changes are reactive, and some are proactive. If I see that I'm holding too much of the fed's money, I reduce my withholding. If I'm clearly in the black, I increase. At the end of the day I see no difference in your situation with OT as mine with sales commission. Not trying to convince anyone to change from their preferred method. I just know how I can make more money in my situation and take full advantage of it.
