Got a cap for mine after using a bed rack for the last year. Wanted to be able to lock away all our stuff and keep bikes inside it on long trips.

My perfect setup is a cap and a trailer. Trailer for hauling and my cap for my hunting, fishing and camping gear. I use my truck a lot more with the cap than I did without but everyone uses their truck differently a cap is an expensive addition but well worth it to me. I'm a gear junky

Build a storage rack that is the same height as your bed and it's a one man job
I remove and install mine all the time as needed

    No pics
But just set 4 4x4s and either use pipe or a stud as a stringer to set topper on
Just make the post are set wider than the bed

If I had a long bed, I would have a cap already for camping. I had a cap on my 1992 and it was a great camper. It's much harder for me to justify the cap on my current short bed since I probably wouldn't sleep in it and 95% of what I normally carry is manageable with the tonneau cover.

I can't really even use a cap for my dog since it is so ridiculously hot in TX in the summer. The next vehicle might be a 4Runner just to better accommodate the dog (assuming they don't screw it up too badly in the next gen).

I like the way they look with a cap, but if you haul they are a pain.

Daughter told me that the cap makes it look like an old mans truck. It works for my needs

If you need a cap then you should just buy a 4Runner. Caps make you look like an old bro, or just old.

4Runners don't have 6' of cargo space or I would have...

from some one who lives in your neck of the woods, do both! where i bought mine from they will take it off/on and store for 20 bucks a month. i usually take it off for summer months and throw it back on in the winter.

Truck bed without a cap has more space than one that has one.

You said "If you need a cap then you should just buy a 4Runner". I needed a 6' bed and a secure place for my bikes and a 4runner can't do that.
