I'm not. I mean who is happy about more tax but I'm not freaking out about it. I am a little disappointed that this tax actually acts as a progressive rate income tax. If you make less than $40,000 a year and have any children you actually get a net rebate which makes no sense except from a political angle. Make no mistake, that's intentional, it lines up nicely with the current governments support base. By keeping it not revenue neutral they are able to use it as a rebate cheque to their key constituents and continue to collect taxes on the rest of the province, particularly in rural areas where they have almost no support.

I understand that putting a price on Carbon is a necessity but to be fair there already was a Carbon Tax in Alberta before this one. It was only on heavy emitters though so it was a bit covered up. That's also a reason why they support the new plan. Really all that happened is that the rest of us were lumped in with them to share the load so to speak. Unfortunately that also results on tax (initial energy cost of manufacturing) on tax (tax on shipping energy costs) on tax (tax to the energy consumer) on tax (GST applied to total purchase) in some cases.

At least the government has locked in natural gas and electricity prices for their own term. Who cares what happens to them when they are gone in the next election right?

I like their plan around energy generation and switching over to natural gas but it is a bit scary that they outline a 15 year timeline to that goal yet only have the price locked in until 2019.

I told you gas went up 20 cents. Figure that one out. Last time I tried their was the 4.5 cents on the gas itself, another 1.5 cents for the shipping carbon tax, another 1.5 cents for the manufacturing carbon tax, another 2.5 cents for the extra GST/road tax, and then 10 cents missing which is what the manufacturers and resellers are taking home to keep them happy during this mess. Too bad the government won't look after us by looking into that. Instead they are too busy trying to keep the big oil companies happy in the media so they can have a shot at winning the next election which will be based on how Calgary and Edmonton vote. Edmonton is a government town and with the raises and union protections the government has thrown in for that group quietly they have that city locked down. All they need to do is get half of Calgary to vote for them and they will win another term. Sad but true. If they keep big oil happy and the economy recovers a bit Calgary is a lock.

Anyways, back on point, the funeral home is doing the same thing as the large oil companies. They see an opportunity to bury the costs of the tax in other fees, profit, while blaming the Carbon Tax.

We did. Don't do it. It's just more of the same with different special interests involved. The NDP aren't a minor party anymore. They are the voice of the unions, subpar income earners, and those who benefit from the bureaucracy. I'd be fine with it if they targeted corperations to pay for their benefits to those groups but they dont, they put the load on the backs of the middle class just like every other party. Every party has a target demographic and they make all of their moves to benefit those groups. The people hardest hit in Alberta by the Carbon Tax are families with 2 or more kids and average incomes from both parents. Yes, it puts money in the pockets of the poor but what good is that when you take it away from the average family? Don't believe the spin. Look past that and look at how the government executes the goals society is demanding. You'll always find that the middle class gets the short end of the stick while the wealthy get wealthier no matter whether the PCs, Liberals, or NDPs are in charge.

The NDP in Alberta were supposed to be a change. They were supposed to take care of families and low income earners by progressively taxing the richest among us and re-configuring the economy. People elected politicians with no previous political experiences hoping for something new. Instead the NDP brought in the top brass from the Federal party and turned all of the new young politicians into drones for the small experienced leadership of that party. It's sad in so many ways but it shows the futility of hoping that the NDP can change anything for the average person from the status quo. Instead a few benefit while more will become poor.

Do a little research how NDP screwed Ontario not that long ago. Or how they are screwing out west. No bone.

Ottawa is never a bad time. Too bad it's a bit cold for anything interesting to be going happening on Sparks Street.

Quebec City is great but if you are strictly an English speaker stay in the Old City. Anything between Montreal and the Gaspe is francophone country and they get a little rude around anglophones. Stick to the touristy areas and you won't have to deal with that. On the other side if you put in the effort and learn a bit of French you can win the locals over pretty easily.

I know a lot of the hate I get from my friends for Quebec is reinforced when they visit areas outside of downtown Montreal and the old city in Quebec on vacations. It's really sad in a way since it just multiples the sterotype that Quebec hates the rest of Canada which isn't true. They are just overprotective of their culture because of their isolation from other French cultures and a perception that without the protections they place on Canadian French culture that they would be force to become Anglicized some how.
