My experience as well, do what you can in French, and you receive big smiles (or laughter depending on what you actually say). Je parlez un petite francais. Tres petite. Lol

Yes. Sadly though it's hard to convince a bunch of farmers to learn a bit of French just so they can go on vacation in Canada lol. It also hurts that it's easier to fly into Quebec from the USA than from Canada.

View of the Saint Lawrence in the dead of winter on a blue bird day is unreal. Can just imagine those cannons near the fairmont in QUebec city defending the shoreline.

My Dad grew up in Montreal. When I was younger he took me for "a real smoke meat sandwich" at a joint he went to as a kid. Also took me for "steamies" which are steamed hotdogs on steamed bread. Will always remember that.

Not mine but saw on the local adds if anyone is intrested...

    http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/iKamper-Skycamp-roof-top-tent_28904166

From ADD - again not mine, nor do I know this person.:

Here's the deal. iKamper already has 2 models of roof top tent on the market, both retail for about $4000 CAD.

They are launching a Kickstarter for their new Skycamp roof top tent Feb 27th so I reached out to them and they have offered me the chance to order 10 direct right now for an additional $100 savings per tent.

Pricing = $1850 USD + $195 delivery to Vancouver so approx $2700 CAD.

I am hoping to get 9 other people to order with me so we all can save and - more importantly - get ahead of the cue. Delivery to Vancouver is expected for late April.

Hit me up if interested. I will need to place order in the next couple weeks (has to be in before the feb 27th kickstarter campaign starts).

    Specs:
    Gross Weight - 150 lbs (68kg)*
    Weight Limit - 900 lbs (400kg)*
    Speed Limit - 75 mph (120kmh)*
    Mattress - 75"x 82"x 1.2" (3cm)
Sleeping Capacity - 2 Adults and 2 Children
    Ladder - Telescopic Aluminum Ladder
    Material:
    Top: Fiberglass
    Floor: Aluminum Honeycomb
Fabric: Poly 250D / Poly Cotton
    Mattress: High Density Memory Foam

I've done a lot of research on roof top tents and have owned (and loved) the ARB Simpson III for years but this new iKamper hard top pop up is the business. Would be great to be able to save as a group and get 10 of them on the BC trails."

My mom was born and raised in Montreal, my dad was born and raised in Templeton, QB, and my Grandfather was a mayor of a small town in Quebec in the 60's as well as a HydroQuebec Engineer. To say I have ties to Quebec is an understatement lol.

The sad thing though is that because both sides of my family are Anglophone most of them have either moved to the Ottawa side of the river or farther into Ontario. My Grandfather, who was obviously very political, received death threats during his tenure as mayor due to his Protestant/Anglophone roots and things just got worse after the FLQ crisis. It's a complicated area and even within my family there is some tension between the members that have married into French families and those that haven't. It's a hell of a problem with no great solutions. Long and short French extremism lives on healthy in Quebec even though it is rarely addressed.

His knowledge of Canadian places, and making stories out of seemingly ordinary moments, weaving in tidbits of stories he listened to from his travels across Canada, in a lilting, sometimes monotonous tone, yet instantly recognizable that had your ears glued to the radio for the next hilarious, or emotional moment in the stories; stories you could relate to, often paintig pictures in your mind of familiar places, or moments in your own life.

I went to St. Patrick's HS in Quebec City.

Mix 95%/190 proof alcohol & cheap red wine (St. George's), pour it in a plastic cane, then proceed to get really fucked up at the Carnival.

I also spent part of my adolescence, then young adulthood in Montreal. Fortunately I am bilingual.

It's a great culture. As @Sterdog stated, simply try to speak French and they'll love ya.

Not sure if the news outside of Alberta is reporting on it at all but the NDP has created several new PLUZs and a Provincial Park in the Alberta portion of the Yellowstone to Yukon park project. Looks like all the trails in the park and most of those in the PLUZ will be closed to motor vehicles and OHV effectively killing all offroading in those areas. Lots of promises around trail relocation but nothing has been put in writing apart from the promise of closures. Sad days are coming.

Any east coast members have some tips for spots to visit this summer? Pretty much going to be in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, and Newfoundland.

    It's all over http://www.aohva.com/

Basically they are doing the public consultations on Castle right now and they'll do the ones on Livingston and Porcupine Hills in the fall. So far the consultations have been information sessions with no input taken from the crowd. Those who have tried to voice their opinions have been told to shut up. Those that question the generalized science being used to force this issue, even those like myself with the proper qualifications to understand ecology far better than the people running the consultations, have been asked to leave. It's a pretty grim situation right now.
