also note... I tested the old OEM key with the transponder removed.... the key will no longer start the car.... it will turn over the engine but the engine will not start.

The small transponder chip is required to start the car.

Just ordered mine on Amazon as well. Thanks for all the insight!!! This is great as my current key is really trying to make holes in my pant pockets.

For those of you who bought the logos, would you want to sell any of them? Looks like there's quite a few that were sent.

Just got my flip shell today. Got everything moved over and I'm getting the key blade cut tomorrow morning. Couple nods here:

1.) Removing the transponder chip is no doubt the hardest part with the swap. I used a dremel and kept at it. I shaved the front side and the exposed smaller side. I the used a blow drier to heat up the glue and plastic. I then used a pick and a small flat heat screw driver to work more of the plastic off and eventually got a chance to wiggle the chip free. All these steps were repeated multiple times. I also used a small metal dremel bit to clear some plastic underneath the chip to help coerce it out. Needless to say, sheesh! I was able to keep my original fob/key in one piece so now it will be used as a spare access key for the doors/tailgate. The best advice I can give in regards to extracting the chip is perseverance and patience. The damn thing will come out eventually. Adding blow drier heat definitely helped but still took quite a bit of effort. Think of it as extracting a tooth. Wiggling it towards the end helped.

2.) I removed the key blade completely (removed the roll pin) to make it easier on the locksmith tomorrow. I want a high success rate here so I didn't want anything getting in the way.

3.) My chip fit into the new slot of the flip key very loosely. I added some thin cardboard to act as a shim to hold it in place. I also used some foam on the other half to ensure the chip wouldn't fall out and rattle around inside the fob later down the road. (I also used foam to fill the void of the original key).

More to report tomorrow but as others have suggested, the old key will not completely start the car. It was kinda fun to try and hold the chip in one hand and start with the other to understand how the transponder works. All-in-all (and assuming the key cutting goes well tomorrow), this will be a worthwhile swap. The current key is literally trying to create holes in all my pants/my leg. I paid around $8 for the flip key shell and I was quoted around $2.50 to have the key cut.around $10 in cash and a few hours of my time, definitely worth it!

Add another successful swap!!! Whoo hooo! Super stoked as everything works like a charm now. The locksmith even cut my blank for free! I was so excited to get this going, I brought tools in my truck and reassembled the fob in the parking lot. It now lives happily on my key ring.

    Thanks a ton @strick8 and @Citadel!!!

You can source this fob from many places. Ebay and Amazon seem to be the places of choice. Search for a 2012-2014 "Camry flip key" and you'll have what you need. If you look at the bottom of this thread, posted links to these should be listed. Look to spend $6-$10 shipped for one of these. Get the key cut from an actual locksmith and remove the key blade COMPLETLEY (remove roll pin to extract). Your locksmith will appreciate this and there's a higher chance at success.

For sure. If it wasn't for that damn glued transponder chip... Key fobs like the F.J. just had them inserted into the button module. Very easy to extract. Not the case with our manual key fobs. Dremel and hair drier will help but that will be the part that takes the most time. Locksmith can cut the key in about a minute.

Found a video of the transponder chip extraction. This person destroys the original fob in the process. There are many ways to extract the transponder chip and both @Citadel and I have had success using a dremel to help with the extraction while still keeping the original fob mostly intact. The video below will provide a good idea of what's required.

    https://youtu.be/q8QasS5LLWY?t=86

The one good thing I'll say about putting in the effort to extract the chip is if you ever bust your key, you're looking at an $8 replacement as opposed to a $100+ replacement from Toyota (since you can move the chip and button assembly into a new shell).

I got one of these Amazon flip fobs as well, going to try switching over the electronics with all of the great tips in this thread.

My first though was that the fob feels really cheap. That's unfortunate. The movement of the flip key is a little clunky. I guess I shouldn't expect any better for $10.
