Rear chassis power on a Thomas School bus. Sent it down to NC machinery because we have been short handed with only 4 techs in the shop, also because some people are less capable then others...I've been non stop on huge jobs....:annoyed:

Anyways, they replaced the HEUI pump because of a no start complaint and managed to pinch an o-ring causing the engine to get douched in oil via a high pressure oil line.

Blue/ white thing in between the pump and fitting is the o-ring.

752E54D6-E232-4118-B511-06F59E66898A_zps_c0ef200a112dba5bddf904f7fbe72c937a0a0dd4.jpg Pulled the bad o ring out and replaced then pressure washed the engine....next day, another no start at a school. I ended up replacing the ESS pack, fixing the no start problem. After doing that I fired the bus up and pulled outside, that's when I smelled the burning, the combination of water and oil in the fuse/relay panel caused the fuel heater relay to stick closed and melt. I killed main power before shit got really bad but I'm still stuck re-wiring the rear half of a bus.

Ewwww, sounds like working on some of the equipment around here. The last time something caught on fire I got it pretty quick with the extinguisher. D5 LGP dozer, positive battery cable had wore through the sheething and arc'd on the top of the tranny, which was covered in sweatty ATF and hydraulic fluid. Boss chewed my ass and said "that's what I have insurance for". The mechanic that had to rewire it chewed my ass for not letting it burn, and now he had to deal with the mess. Oh well. Next time I'll run to the store and grab some marshmallows

As soon as I cut power, I immediately regretted it.

I always get the fucked in depth wiring jobs. This was a note I left my boss when a MFDT tried to ignite on me.

Sounds like our last plane, had the power feed to the APU fuel module wiring swapped and when we went to power it up to test, it found some way to short internally over to the power return wire for the fuel module heater. 28VDC at 50 amps cooks the shit out of a 20ga wire and burns enough that we had to replace 6 full wire harnesses. All told I think it was 500-600 wires and took a week and a half including all the retesting required.

if you're ballsy enough the wire will eventually act like a fusible link and break the connection :anonymous:

Oh believe me, I know... that's the only reason it didn't do more damage than it did.

We didn't actually find it until what we assume was a day or 2 later because there was no smell left by the time we found it. And all we found was a chunk of shielding and wire that turned to ash when you touched it.

    Looks, of course.

16s won't clear my big boy brakes.

    They might not.

I think most folks with 4th gens are grinding their calipers down to clear 16s. Something about blindly (as in I cannot see where the brake fluid passages are) grinding away on brake calipers just seems inherently stupid to me.
