I posted on another thread, recently, after receiving a $276 credit on my 5 year old Michelins from Discount Tire how I really like the way they do business and have always had a good experience. So today I go to pick up my new spare wheel they ordered for me and they were to put one of the take offs that I had just replaced on the new wheel. I tell them I am there to pick up the tire and wheel and he says he will bring it out to me. He rolls out a brand new tire. I said that tire looks nice but mine is supposed to be a used Michelin. He says well we accidentally threw your used tire away so we gave you a new (not Michelin) 255/70/16 tire for free. No questions asked, just like that. We screwed up and we made it right without even saying a word to me. Man I like the way they do business.

I have no connection with Discount tire other than as a satisfied customer.

Great customer service, but I've had a few issues with the shop guys. They don't know what they're doing at times, but for the price it's hard to beat.

Yeah... caved in the driver's side floor of my Infiniti, then did not tighten the lug nuts on one rim of my wife's commuter car and the wheel damn near came off on the freeway... and ruined the rim.

They owned up to both mistakes, and fixed them, but fuck... who hires these people?

Most of the time they're high school students, so that explains some of the mistakes.

I avoid Discount and willingly pay more elsewhere. I bet there are better shops in other areas, but not here.

As the saying goes, burn me once shame on you. Burn me twice shame on me.

Sometimes they make mistakes. I mean they aren't hiring rocket scientist but discount tire has earned my business.

My next set of tires i buy, if they don't ship to a local shop again I'll drive 50 miles to the nearest discount and back happily.

+1, but the note that each store manager sets the "tone" (i.e., level of professionalism) for his shop. Some are great. Others, not so much.

That's why I take the time to meet and talk with the manager, explaining my expectations, before letting them work on my vehicles. Generally, I observe all work being performed too.

I would agree that the techs at Discount tire are hit and miss. I found a great Discount tire in a smaller neighboring town, so I make the drive. When I go in for tires, I always ask to talk directly to the guy doing my work. I make it clear what I expect, and it becomes personal. I also do not let anyone drive my truck. I drive it in and out. All that said, they have been great to me!!

Their prices are great and I've used them twice now. My only issue is after the last time I was there, I lost not one, but TWO fukn center caps. My fault for not checking before I drove off, but still. I probably would have lost the others, as they were loose as well, but I didn't notice until the first two were gone. I'm glad replacements are readily available, but what a pain in the ass.

Discount Tire is one of my two preferred places for tires. My only gripe with all of them is some of the techs (grease monkeys or ?) put the lug nuts on with their air wrenches and sometimes screw up the threads on the lug bolts. I prefer that they put them on manually and use a torque wrench to tighten them to spec.

I recently bought 4 new BFGoodrich KO2s from Discount Tire. Took them to my buddies shop and installed them myself.

Three balanced well and the fourth was taking entirely too much weight to road force balance. Swapped the tire to a different wheel to confirm it was either the tire or the wheel and it turned out to be the tire was just so far out of balance.

Drove back over to Discount Tire 15 minutes before they closed, mentioned what I had done and asked what they could do. No hassle what-so-ever, they pulled the truck in, ripped the KO2 off and installed a brand new one, confirmed it balanced well and sent me on my way. No cost at all.

It's so rare, IMO, these days to get that kinda customer service. No one questioned my intents, no one acted like I was there to point blame or get one over on them, they just did what it took to make me a happy customer and did it with hustle.

Very, very pleased with a couple of my recent experiences with Discount Tire.

Glad you had a good experience there.

I've tried Michelins twice and will never ever buy them again. Both times the sidewall developed cracks that looked like miniature squares all around the face of the sidewall (and I didn't put any kind of tire dressing on them to have them prematurely break down) before I had them 2 years. After I complained about them to everyone who would listen, Discount finally replaced them, and put a new set on. Same thing happened with that set.

Google problems with Michelins, you will see they are not the quality tire they used to be.

I had good luck with them too. Although they messed up and forgot to put the TPMS sensors I had bought in, they called me to let me know they forgot and I brought the truck back in and they put em all in. And because the stupid TPMS system was looking for one in the spare they just tossed one in there for free, which just kinda shocked me. Those stupid things were $60 a piece, but they knocked them down to $40 a corner for the main 4 tires. Maybe just because I was buying a set of Duratrac's too and they were already making some good money off me.

Discount Tire has been one of the worst businesses I've come across. They price gouge and their idiot workers I'm willing to bet money never rotated my tires when they said they did. They hire teenagers who don't care about anything. They quoted me over $1200 for a set of Firestones that I got for $900 and thats including the credit from mileage I never got out of a set of Yokahamas.

Will never use them ever again.

Funny how experiences are so different with different people.

Your go to tire shop requires you to watch their every move to prevent them from screwing up?

I stand right behind my truck and watch them. I have had to push back to get them not to replace my valve stems.

Lugs can be installed safely with an impact wrench by competent techs with the right torque stick(s). Final torquing should, of course, always be done with a properly calibrated torque wrench.

I think this is the old debate of it depending on locations, managers, and their employees. Every Discount Tire will be different. I've personally had solid experiences with the one I go to. I always sit at the window and watch. They always take care of my wheels with care (especially my recent trip of having my SCS wheels installed). They loved them and were very careful with them.

Of course, I always double check my wheels for scratches before I leave and I check my lugs with my torque wrench when I get home.
