My uncle has always loved small trucks, and his favorite has always been Toyota. He's owned quite a few late 80s-early 90s Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota pickup trucks. He also had a Dodge D50/Ram 50 (Mitsubishi clone). One Toyota truck I remember in particular was a black 1987 regular cab short bed 2WD model. It was black with a gray interior and very rusty. However, under the hood was a 22RE and 5-speed that ran like a Swiss watch, and it had less than 100K miles in like 2003! It also had factory A/C (obviously still R-12) that worked great. It even had the factory tape deck that still worked. My uncle owned this truck for a time in the early 90s, sold it to a friend, and then bought it back as a shop truck for his hubcap store in the early 2000s. He sold it AGAIN a short time later and bought a 2002 Ford Ranger with automatic so his employees would have something newer to drive. As of 2009, the 1987 Yota was still in existence. He also had a 1988-1990 Mazda B-series regular cab that had automatic transmission and no A/C. An odd combination. It was MINT but his employees complained about the lack of A/C so he sold it and bought something else with A/C.

And what makes you think anybody would want to get rid of one of those if they had it?

I got mine from a guy that had PLENTY of money and he only used it to haul supplies while he built a new house.

When I was 17, my grandpa's friend gave me driving lessons in his white 2003 regular cab short bed automatic first gen. I wanted that truck so badly. However one warm day in 2007 my Grandpa's friend let me drive it and I noticed that the A/C wasn't blowing as cold as it should. That kind of fizzled my interest in it. He sold it to his son and bought a new GMC Sierra regular cab short bed 2WD that year.

I currently have a 2015 AC 4x4 4cyl AT and if something happened to it, I would look for another 2nd gen. Unfortunately, at least localy, a clean low mileage 2 gen is selling for the same price as a new 3gen.

My uncle has owned so many mini trucks over the years I've lost count. A Dodge D50/Ram 50 (Mitsubishi clone), at least one early 80s Datsun, one Mazda B-series, numerous Ford Rangers, and at least 3 Toyotas. Most of these were older beaters that he bought as shop trucks for his hubcap store. He also frequently went to insurance auctions and wholesale auctions bought mildly damaged vehicles to flip and sell for a profit.

He looked at and sat in my Taco not long after we bought it and told my dad and me that we'd made a great purchase because Toyotas are so great, but that he would never buy a 2nd gen because they are too big.

My uncle has owned probably 2 or 3 Toyota pickups, ranging in year from like 1985 to 1991 (he still has the 1991, which he taught me how to drive stick in).

He also bought three trucks new, which he special ordered, kept in mint condition, and didn't haul anything but light loads in the beds. In order, these three trucks were:

1993 Dodge Dakota Sport regular cab short bed 2WD; Black with gray interior; 3.9L V6/5-speed/posi rear; A/C, cruise/tilt, power windows, power locks, cassette player.

My uncle traded the Dakota after just a year for...

A 1994 Ford Ranger XLT regular cab short bed 2WD; Teal green with gray interior; 3.0L V6/5-speed/3.42 posi; A/C, cruise, tilt, power windows, power locks, cassette player...

After 8 years of loyal service, my uncle decided to buy a new Tacoma. He bought...

A 2002 Toyota Tacoma S-Runner; Black, and well, we all know an S-Runner is pretty much loaded. I forget why he sold the S-runner, but now my uncle has a custom 1991 Toyota pickup and a 2001 Porsche Boxster S, as well as a 1967 Corvette restomod, and an AMC Rebel Machine that he hasn't even finished restoring yet. He and his wife also have a 2010 Honda Element, and one other car but I forget what it is.

Anyway, my uncle likes all Toyota trucks and is impressed with what I've done to mine, but he would never buy one because he thinks they are too damn big!

Im with you. I owned a 2001,2006 and now a 2014 Taco and if anything happened to mine i would look for a 2012-15, I just dont like the looks of the 3rd gen and the horror stories, but especially the looks. If I wanted a truck that looks like a Trunda. Well I guess I would get a Tundra.

Nearly 400k miles on that puppy and it still runs and drives perfectly.

I went from a 1st gen to a used 2014 last March. The multicolor interior of the 3rd gens was a major turn-off for me. The seat fabric felt cheap too. If something happens to my 2nd gen it too will be replaced with a 2nd gen.

I'm with OP. I was sitting at a light waiting to turn right and an accident happened next to my 2nd gen and one of the cars got plowed into the side of my truck. Its in the shop getting a new bedside but its got me thinking what if my 2nd gen gets totaled. I know I'm gonna get shit flamed for this but I'd probably buy a 2017 Raptor because I'm not interested in the gear hunting and hi reving 3.5liter turd gen. Sorry 3rd gen guys. Just my opinion.

I've had my truck parked next to a 1990s Chevy 1500 regular cab short bed and there isn't much size difference!
