BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Depending on cost, I'm gonna say seal it yourself but do what you like and congrats!

Thank you. They are asking 900 to do the inside and out and will warranty scratches.from what I can tell the nano like a coat of wax on steroids? Is that a correct statement. Forgive ignorance but I really want to keep this truck rite.

If you're able/willing to do it yourself, you could probably save $800. Personally, I wouldn't do it. "Coatings" are nice for some people. But they're not bullet proof and do require some maintenance. The product cost to them is probably less than $75. And if it's a true coating, they'll probably (SHOULD) polish first. If they're just washing the truck and say they're applying a "nanocoating", I'd run quick.

Some coatings will protect to some degree from wash/dry induced swirls in clear coat. But "guarantees" in that area would be hard to give- unless they mean they'll re-coat it for you in due time. That's a lot to spend without knowing EXACTLY what brand they're using and what prep work they will be doing.

I'm not knocking coatings at all. For some people they're great. But if you're a guy that likes to wax your truck a couple times a year, I'd skip it.

I'd be more inclined to find a professional detailer, ask questions, and have it done in that environment rather than the dealer environment.

Exactly. I do not know what it is exactly. I spoke to the salesmen briefly about it. As we both know the one selling you something is the last person you should get the info from. So I have 2 kids 4 and 6, I thought it would be a good idea for the interior. However I'm sure there is something else out ther I can apply. I also like to crack a beer and wax my truck. They have a video on the product I'll see if I can get it and post it. She did not say anything about polishing she did say if I'm going to do not to wait too long. The truck needs to be clean. It's a 17. She also said it takes about 3 hours to dry. Thanks so much for the reply. I'll try to get that video

Do a little reading here- it hardly scratches the surface (no pun intended). But if you really want to do some research, dig into the Autogeek forum.

Yeah it needs to be cleaned and abrasively polished before application. If it's been washed ONCE at the dealer, it's gonna have swirls. And those swirls will be semi-permanent if they are applying a true coating without polishing first.

When I hear the dealer say "do it soon"... what I immediately think is that they do NOT intend to machine polish (or spend much time machine polishing). They want to get the truck and apply the coating asap so they don't have to do as much prep work to do. Coatings are only as good as the preparation. And that's where I see a dealer slacking. They're in the quick sale business. Not the detailing business. You can always have a pro detailer apply a coating any time in the future. And they'll prep correctly if they're worth a damn.

Again, my advice isn't pro or con coating. It's just that if you are going to do it, it needs to be done correctly. I wouldn't throw down $900 without some thorough Q&A. And if you don't know enough about the process to ask the right questions- then I'd for sure hold off and approach it more slowly with a professional detailer.

Another approach- Honestly, if you're someone that enjoys working on your truck... a griots polisher is about $150. Pads $50-75. Coating sub-$100 (and it'll probably be better than what the dealer is offering). I know not everyone wants to get in that deep.

I'm a detailing nut. I'd love to try a coating, but I really like buffing and wax/sealing a few times a year. As such, a coating just isn't necessary. Coatings are more for the person that wants to set it and forget it. As far as protection- a coating may lessen wash/dry swirls. But it's not gonna do anything for a tricycle handle bar or a shrub beside the driveway. As far a looks- it's subjective, but a wax would probably look better. They're not magical in that regard. It does depend on the color.

I think they want me to roll it into the payment and so I'll have to make the decision by Monday. I'll ask around on that link you sent me and educate myself as best I can. If what she is saying is true regarding warranty scratches and stains or burns on the interior I'll consider but as you pointed out I'm not informed enough to make a big decision like that. I found a few articles that said it actually gave the paint a better finish than a wax. I'll keep you posted... thanks

Had it done on my 15 and 16, learned my lesson, its cool, it does what it says as advertised but just not worth the $$$, you can still achieve the same protection and far better depth and shine while saving money going the traditional route.

Note: A majority of the cost of applying coatings is in the prep work. The actual product application takes a fraction of the time that the prep work takes. A pro detailer, for example, might spend 8 hours polishing (minimum) and an hour applying. A dealership might spend an hour washing or polishing and an hour applying. Again, I have no idea what your dealer is doing/offering. But hope I've clued you in just a little bet. $900 is a hefty fee!

Also- I've heard that dealer "guarantees" may require you to go in periodically to have it "refreshed", whatever that means. And if you don't, they won't honor guarantees. Another thing to look into.

As with a lot of things- if it sounds too good to be true...

Sealant (synthetic wax) technology as come a long way in the last few years. There's some awesome stuff out there with super easy application and removal. These are just a few in my collection (and ones that are often recommended by the experts). You'd miss out on all this with a coating.

I would never let the dealer touch my truck with anything detailing related. They have no idea what they're doing. Just go look at the cars/trucks in the show rooms and see how swirled to shit that the paint already is. When we bought our 4Runner from the dealer we told them not to touch it at all or wash it or anything. Even if they're installing stuff like that nano coat, I doubt they're doing completely right. Find someone else.

Yeah just like how the dealer rapes people with charging $10k extra on a new tacoma with a spacer lift and bro wheels and tire package, sounds overpriced

If you ever saw what your $900 bought you in dealer applied "Environmental Protection Package" you'd be absolutely appalled. They're usually "applied" (and I use that term loosely) by the lowest paid employee at the dealership in less than an hour. No wonder the profit margin is astronomical. Very little care and even less prep work goes into it. Run, don't walk, in the other direction whenever they start arm twisting for this kind of stuff. You're far better off doing it at home or having a professional detailer do it.

My local dealership has a body shop on site that I was told would apply the snake oil to my trucks finish. They really kept on me to have it done. I told them I can buy allot of good paint sealers, polish, microfiber towels and the such for $750.00 they wanted to charge me. I tried some Duragloss Aquawax yesterday when I was drying off my truck after washing it. I highly recommend Duragloss products!

Thank you fellas all valid points... especially the fact that you are rite the dealers are crooks. The thing that got my attention was a "scratch warranty"? I will take my chances and let a pro do it. ThNks guys
