I'm new to Toyota trucks... I have only recently purchased a low miles 2013. Reading all of the truck bed threads I'm starting to freak out a bit.
Did I buy a piece of crap truck?????
Is the composite bed on these too delicate to actually use?
I use a truck to haul things... I fill the bed with wood, I load top soil in it, I carry my snowmobile, lawn tractor, tiller and any other thing that needs a lift from point A to point B...
Is the bed on my taco up to the task or did I make a mistake when I bought this thing?

Its fine. Quit reading and go use it.

BTW, it will hold more than the springs will allow you to carry anyway.

Should you throw pointed rebar into the vertical bed wall by the cab? Of course not.

They are meh. I have a 3rd gen and first week of ownership I gouged a part of the wheel well. It's a light-duty bed. It can handle the weight but be gentle loading.

I'm looking for a way to get it Line-Xd

    Haha!

I freaked out too! But had a reason! Jack wagon dealer sold it to me as a Rhino Liner lined bed! I didn't notice till a few weeks later while working underneath.

No biggie! Modern plastics can be VERY tough with benefit of not rusting or denting. I've not read of any breaking so far...

You got one of the late-cycle second gens. They are quickly becoming more sought after than the third gens in the used truck market. I was skeptical of the nylon (plastic) bed at first, but no longer. I have beat mine pretty hard and it hasn't broke yet. The weakest link is the tailgate, there are a few companies that sell a steel sheet to reinforce the inside of the tail gate. I havn't done that yet, but I plan to some day.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Just use it man.

use it and don't worry about it. it's a truck. if you think your going to crack it you won't and if it actually do then you can repair it with some fiber glass mesh and resin. just be glad it's not made of aluminum like another brand of truck. I have used mine for everything you can think of and besides some scratches and some spilled paint it has held up better then a steel bed. so don't worry about it.

Wait! What?! Our truck beds are made of plastic?!

Get a bed mat. You'll be fine.

I've loaded medium size landscaping stones from a front end loader. No permanent damage whatsoever. My old Ford would have definitely dented from that job.

I've never even heard of any issues w/ that. I say you probably bought the best tacoma out there. Which is one of the best trucks on the market. Your good to go.

I bought a 4x6 "horse stall mat" at local farm supply shop and trimmed it to fit the wheel wells. Sucker is like 3/4" thick and weighs 100 lbs. Ain't nuttin' gonna damage that baby. And it acts as extra weight in the winter, ie. no need for sand bags.

The bed on my 2nd gen is more durable than the line-x'd bed on my 1st gen. The plastic is pretty thick and, obviously, has better memory than steel. I can't say the same for the 2nd gen tailgate though, but I hear there is a fix for that.

The inverter cover (if applicable) and storage compartment doors will likely get trashed or torn off if you haul loose rock or anything similar.

Interesting...I was looking at barn mats at Tractor Supply the other day and wondering about those. Those mat's hold up behind the benches in a hockey rink so I know that their pretty tough.
I'll also take a look at the OEM mat.

Aluminum??? Not for me, my tweezers are zircon!

And I also installed an aluminum tailgate reinforcing plate for when I load my wheeler, bikes, etc. Works great.
