You may want to check out the Northern Neck of VA,near Dahlgren. I hate to say this as a (pretty much) lifelong Marylander but most folks I know are trying to move out of the state, not into. Although I do like our new Governor I see myself moving out when I retire, maybe in about 5 years.

    So here is a story...

On Thursday night, my truck was wrongfully towed from my girlfriend's apt complex in Silver Spring. The complex uses an online parking registration, so her car has a sticker with a barcode that is always activated because she is the resident. I have a guest pass tag that hangs from the mirror, with another barcode. She can only use the guest pass 5 times per month, so on the nights I stay there she has to activate that pass. On Thursday night she had activated the pass and I parked in a visitors space. The next morning, walk outside and the truck is gone.

Called the towing company and they said the guest pass tag was registered to a black prius (my girlfriend's car). I went to the towing company and showed them the print out that showed both passes were activated, so regardless it shouldn't have been towed. Towing company guy said he couldn't release it without his manager's approval. By this point the online parking company was open so I called them, they looked into it and figured out that the barcode on the guest pass and resident pass were switched (and had been that way for two years). By the tow company's explanation, my girlfriend's car should have been towed every night for the last two years. Spent 5 hours trying to get the truck back from the towing company. Ultimately, the online parking registration company acknowledged it a data entry error, and called the tow company to release it, and offered to pay any fees. So after 6 hours of calls and arguing I finally had my truck back without paying a cent.

I am now in the process of getting the parking lot security footage from the apartment complex to make sure they towed it with the rear wheels up. When I asked the tow company, they said they used a flatbed, but I've never seen a flatbed patrol the lot, and I'm not sure a flabed would have been able to maneuver into a position to tow it. Is there any problem, if they had towed it from the rear, with the two front wheels down? It was not in 4WD and the parking brake was not engaged.

I'm going to file a consumer complaint with the towing company through the Maryland Attorney Generals Office and Prince George's County Better Business Bureau. Also looking into filing a small claims case for my time and my girlfriend's time missed from work that day, and a dealer inspection/repair if I find they towed the truck improperly. I'm not well versed in legalese, and laws, so any advice is appreciated.

    /rant
