not to mention the landslides from all the rain. one of my buddies tried going across earlier and said fuck it and turned around. took him 2 hours just to get out of reno and across the border. turned around and took him 10 minutes to get home. 50 was still closed this morning (may be open by now).

Holy crap! They are evacuating Marysville, Oroville and other towns/cities. If someone missed something during an inspection, or didn't do a required inspection, they are going to get reamed.

News story from yesterday said "no danger to Oroville", today 60 minutes to get out. I'd say somebody messed up real big.

watching it on the weather channel from my hotel up in Boise tonight and the amount of water being released and the speed it's going is insane! i hope it has time to spread out and doesn't hurt anything even further downstream.

Here's what I don't understand. They built an Emergency Spillway into the dam in case the water level of the lake rose faster than they could let it out through the regular spillway. Now that it has and the water is going over the emergency spillway it's eroding the dirt below it and will cause it to fail. It's not concrete below the ER spillway.

What is wrong with this picture?! If you can anticipate an emergency and build a safety valve, why build it in such a way that it's use causes it to fail? Dump a metric shit tonne of water down onto dirt at a high rate of speed and what do you think is going to happen?

My GF is in Atlanta for a conference and is supposed to fly back tomorrow. Looking at a map the Sac river wraps around the airport. The water from Oroville will make it's way down the valley, flooding towns after towns. I think if the dam breaks the airport may have to close. We were talking alternate locations to fly to but Reno is out (hwy 50 closed, 80 is a snowy cluster), which leaves the Bay Area, however I can't imagine trying to get in if the valley gets flooded.

But that's minor compared to all thise poor people who could potentially get flooded out.

My mom lives there and can see the dam from her place 10 miles away. Thank God my dad bought land and built their house where the town would have to flood first. I just hope everyone is kept safe. My sister just informed me that they are let out 100,000 cfm of water now.

I can remember two other times when they let out enough water that down stream flooded. In 1986-87 and 1997.

Thanks! I'm going to have to look into that.

We had to start putting tick colours on our dogs (two little Westies) after I pulled 76 ticks off of them in one month (March). Heck, we took the colors off in December and I had to pull 5 or 6 ticks off of them since. One was wearing a parka.

Looks like they're letting out more than is coming in now and the amount going over the emergency spillway is decreasing rapidly. Hopefully it will stop going over soon. I imagine they'll keep draining the lake as fast as they can for the next several days. We got another long storm coming up. There's already been 3 or so levee breaches, so we have alot of crap happening.
