Manual Transmission Fill and Drain Plugs.
Pic is from my 2017 TRD Sport

    FYI
My Rear Diff took 700ml before it started coming out of the fill hole.
My Manual Transmission took 300ml before it started coming out of the fill hole.
My Front Diff took 300ml before it started coming out of the fill hole.

FSM says 5mm below fill plug and higher is acceptable.
On the rear diff I estimate I had to reach well past 5mm to touch fluid.
On my Transmission I couldn't reach the fluid level but it requires reaching at an awkward angle.
On my front diff I could not reach the fluid level with my finger.

    That is true.
Because mine was low I chose to buy exactly what was in it from factory to top it off. I don't like the idea of mixing fluid brands even if the specs are the same.
When it comes time to drain and refill, I have no problem going with a different brand.

So, I kinda hate to buy a 2nd qt. of ~$50 fluid to use only .1qt Heck, a drain and refill might not even take that .1 So, what do you think? If I need any more than 1qt. I just top off with some of the leftover 75w-90 (GL-4) gear oil I'll be using in the Manual Trans.

Well, it's sold in liters so maybe you won't have to buy any extra at all.

I don't think gear oil is a good idea. Toyota is very specific about the type of fluid being LF type and there is even a * disclaimer of sorts in the owners manual about using LF specific or equivalent. From my research other types of oil contain phosphates that can cause deterioration of the synchros soft metal (brass, copper) bushings in the transfer case. Royal Purples Synchromax is the only aftermarket fluid I could find that is LF specific. Even if you call Red Line they will tell you not to use their gear oil products in the Toyota transfer case. Just my 2cents.

Don't mix. If you're not gonna use what's recommended, might as well use something different for the whole job. The only meaningful opinion you'll get is whether something is equivalent or not. To my knowledge there is no equivalent to the Toyota 75W LF transfer case fluid. Anybody that says they have had no problems using other fluids, may be right, but they also don't have 200,000mi+ on their vehicle. And even if they did, it's a sample of n=1. Hardly good enough to go on from an engineering standpoint.

    http://carspecmn.com/toyota-and-lex...alized-transfer-case-and-differential-fluids/

Again, it's sold in liters which is actually a little over a quart anyway so you will probably be within spec with just one liter. And unless you're doing water crossings or really do have severe service for your vehicle, you shouldn't be doing this very often.

Maybe somebody can answer whether or not they have successfully done a drain and fill with just 1 liter?

Thanks, that makes sense. I guess I'll order two to be safe and hopefully I can return the one.

I'm not complaining, and big picture my past Toyotas have been very low maintenance. But this scenario is straight out of the BMW Service play-book "you need 1 (point) [x] of something but only in qty's of two..." Maybe I can sell the unused 0.9L in the classifieds?

Today at 4745 miles I changed the motor oil. Replaced the 0w-20 with Mobile 1 and the filter with a 57047 Wix.
I noticed quite a bit of metal particles inside the plastic filter case. Is this normal during the break in period? I drew an oil sample either way, and will send to Blackstone for analysis.

IMG_4400.jpg IMG_4420.jpg Replaced rear diff oil at 22k miles, soon will be doing front & transfer case. Diff oil came in at around 3.5 quarts, maybe a hair over (full is 4.0 in my truck) and dirty. Debris magnet was pretty caked, probably 5mm thick of shmoo. Will be contacting toyota ASAP about the low fluid as my service department had been asked several times to check. Also will be examining debris under the PG1000 microscope at work for fun

Please let me know what you find. I'm thinking of changing my rear diff fluid soon. I have about 2500 kms on the truck.

I was reading somewhere (so completely unfounded) that some transmission places change out their fluid on a new diff after 500 miles.
I'm between 2500-3000 kms on my truck. After seeing @mateo_roberto diff oil condition at 22k miles I thought I would play it safe.
I order me up some Redline 75w85 GL5.

Toyota gaskets / washers for trans/ rear ends etc.
Note I replace crush gaskets each use because they tend to leak .
I am posting this because trying to buy them 1 at a time on ebay or Amazon is crazy. They want as much as $12 a piece for them with shipping . Get them from the dealer for less than $2 a piece or with these sizes I bet you can find them at a local hardware store for cheaper. I bought mine at the dealer to get them to measure . Note a trip to the dealer for me is 100 mile round trip.

Rear drain plug gasket - Toyota part # 12157-10010
Rear fill plug gasket - Toyota part # 12157-10010
Front fill plug gasket - Toyota part # 12157-10010
    This is an aluminum crush washer , OD = 24mm , ID = 18mm, 2mm thick (new)
    Trans case -
Front drain plug gasket - Toyota part # 90430-24003
this is a copper solid washer , OD= 32 mm, ID=24mm , 1mm thick (new) and should be reusable .
    Fill plug gasket - Toyota part # 90430-A0003 . This is a solid aluminum gasket and should be reusable. OD=24mm , ID= 18mm , 2mm thick .
    Transmission -
    Drain plug gasket - Toyota part # 35178-30010 -
Overflow plug gasket - Toyota part # 35178-30010
    these above are an aluminum crush washer . OD=16.5mm , ID= 12mm , 2 mm thick -(new ) .653 in. x .470 in. x .085 in.
    Fill plug gasket - Toyota part # 90301-15004 , this is a rubber O-ring that measured OD 20.3mm (approx. .800in. ) ID - 16mm ( approx. .63in. ) x 2.3mm thick ( .09 in. )
I believe I got this all correct and may have been posted before but , this is what I found .
