I just started to hear the howling sound this weekend with just 4850 miles. I have no modifications and stock tires are still on it. When I went setup my 5000 mile checkup the service write told the it was normal. I told him that I wanted it documented and then he told me that I would have the take led technician for a ride. I hope that they at least it will be documented the discrepancy. I'm new to tacoma world and there is a lot of good info on this site.

    Caution, thread revival rant ahead!
I'm just so pissed at this point. I've had my truck for just over a year and I have been listening to it howl for over 20,000 miles. I've gone through all the proper Chanel's of having it diagnosed and documented. Waiting patiently for Toyota to address the issue and they are just blowing it off. I like everything else about this truck but I can't listen to the howl anymore (nor should I have to). One of the big advertising points of this truck was how quiet they are, and it was for the first 1500 miles or so. Now it's just aggravating, annoying and embarrassing. Every single person who rides in my truck asks, "why is your new truck making that noise.?" What the f**k Toyota? It's time to acknowledge your design flaw and stop telling people it's "normal". IT'S NOT FU**ING NORMAL!! If you consider this normal, your engineers are morons. It really sux when a brand you have been so loyal to gets you by the balls and you can't do a thing about it except never buy another Toyota. RELEASE THE DAMN TSB ALREADY!!

Update: 2/7/17- Dealership has now "re-created" the condition. Toyota told them to test another truck, they did. That one had the whine too. The dealership opened up a case with Toyota.

The ball is now in Toyota's court. I cant continue to drive this truck with this howl coming from the differential.

Toyota has to be aware of this issue, not sure why they don't have a fix for this by now.

I agree. My guess is this will require some sort of major fix, and they are going to say something along the lines of "its not a safety issues, its just an annoying sound, so deal with it".

That's what they already told a majority of us. Even if you get a new differential (like I and many others did), it still howls. And yes I can still hear it over the radio. I got an extended warranty out of it, which was nice, but it is still frustrating. Especially since my two major complaints (this and excessive vibration) are deemed "normal" which a warranty does nothing for. I might just consider using the platinum warranty as a bargaining tool for selling the truck if this doesn't get resolved....

I still think that if I were to take it to a competent shop that specializes in setting up differentials that they could fix it in only a few hours but I'd have to pay for it. I also think that I would have a fair, but not certain, chance of recovering that money from Toyota in small claims court.

If they don't come out with a fix soon, I'll end up doing that but I just haven't had time. Even if I get stuck with the bill, it would fix the last remaining issue that I have with my truck and I'd be happy.

I imagine just about any lawyer could easily get the money back from Toyota, unfortunately it wouldnt be worth it. I just wish when I spent $40K on a truck, I wouldnt have to deal with something like this.

My big question is I'm buying BFG AT Ko2's this week my truck has this problem and I'm afraid if I put the tires on Toyota will turn me away because they will say the tires were the problem. Should I be worried?

Talk to the service manager you will take your truck to first. See what he says. Mine told me to hold off on tires

You would think they would have started putting those plugs in at the Factory by now.

Figured out where my hum was coming from.
It isn't the diff like I thought; it was my exhaust tip ringing.
I hit it with a pressure washer and it made the sound. Strapped some pipe clamps on and it went away completely.

One at the very tip and one halfway on the expanded part of the 'tip'.
No pics; took them off after one week test.
