4 hours in. About 4 to go. Roofs have about 3 feet of snow. Not good.
Been attacking the back. Found the mail box. I wish the wind would blow like hell. Still have to do the front of the house and back of the garage.

A guy told me once that he was so poor growing up that all he got for Christmas was a nickel. Said his dad would sneak in his room that night, take it back, and then whip his butt the next day for loosing it.

Was Alaska already on your radar when you were looking to retire or did you find that there were good opportunities in the area. Just asking because I mentioned checking out Alaska as a possible retirement location to my wife. The reaction wasn't a positive one.

 I gotta confess, if I had a little daughter at this point in life, she'd get $5s, $10s, $20s without doubt ... you can't take it with you ... good on ya'!

Send it to Texas. Anything over an inch and we just close the state.

We came here on a PCS assignment from RAF Mildenhall, UK.

I worked for the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) and came here on temporary duty in 1987; I loved it then and wanted to try for an assignment with the Alaskan RCC back when it was manned by active duty (now manned by AK Air National Guard). My wife was considering it when a big freeze hit up here that made national news (damn CNN); that scared her and she withdrew her support of the idea ... so of course, I never applied/tried then. She grew up in NW Iowa, so harsh Winters were not something she was real anxious to go back to back then; we were married in 1984.

Flash forward to early 2001 and I'm coming due for assignment; Elmendorf is on the list for my cycle and I'm an E-7 so I can actually talk to an assignment manager now. I call them up, make some inquiries about which unit the assignment is to and my odds of getting it. Learn it's to this unit (en route Air Mobility Squadron--which I always preferred over Command Post work) and that the way my numbers line up (time/grade etc) I will get the assignment if I put Elmendorf on my assignment preference sheet. Went home and discussed it with my wife, she agreed to go ... 16 years later here we are and not likely to move as long as we can escape to visit the kids in PHX during Winter; I expect the frequency and length of our visits there will increase as we get older. :)

Something about the cold appeals to me although I know you get all the seasons there. My wife on the other hand grew up in north/west PA so between regular and lake effect snow, she's had her fill. Other than some time spent in Kyrgyzstan I've never experienced anything more than a taste of real winter weather. I'm thinking the most northern location I can hope for when retirement comes might be Wyoming.

Most likely I be lucky to split the difference. So long as I can find some place with a reasonable cost of living, decent health care and a state that doesn't want to tax my pension, 401k and other savings.

I would have moved to Alaska in a heartbeat, when I was younger. Now, we have our sites set on the Oregon coast. Not sure yet where or when we will retire. I am hoping for 65.

Winters here in southcentral AK aren't any worse than what I'd guess you'll see in Wyoming. Ask @MTgirl ... she lived in Kenai for a while and can give you a decent comparison. Huge difference between living in Anchorage area (southcentral AK) and Fairbanks area (interior AK). It's not for everyone, I've found people either love it or hate it. I get sick of Winter every March and wonder why we stay until fishing season comes back around, then I remember why. Since our oldest son moved his family to Phoenix, visiting them is a nice escape that breaks up the Winter and makes it a bit more tolerable. ;)
