I know there are numerous posts about racks on here, but haven't found a specific answer to what I'm looking for and it seems each time I post a gear question on here, it is followed by a well-informed purchase so....

I need a rack on my cab, primarily for the purpose of carrying 3-4 whitewater kayaks on their side (with a Thule stacker holding them upright on a set of crossbars). Have been considering Frontrunner or Prinsu for the racks, but worried they may be a bit overkill for my needs. I really only need 2 crossbars - more would actually hurt the fit of the boats that need a bit of space on the bottom at the cockpit. So a platform style rack, while cool and versatile, would equate to me only using 2-3 of the supplied bars.

Not really a fan of the feet that clip inside the truck (i.e. Thule/Yakima) and would prefer something that bolts on easily, remains waterproof (have seen the horror stories of folks not sealing things up adequately), and has a wind deflector so as not to create wind noise. What other options would folks suggest short of getting a Prinsu and only installing a couple of the bars?

Thanks in advance for the recommendations!

Have you considered the factory rack? The load bars stow to the sides when not in use for better aerodynamics. Personally, I prefer the look of the Prinsu and Frontrunner racks over the factory option, but it sounds like it might suit your needs.

IIRC the OEM rack is only rated for 100 pound, 4 kayaks, I'm assuming will weigh more than that

Would need to be rated for 200-250 lbs weight, but unlikely I'd carry much more than that on the top ever but the weight indeed is what swayed me from OEM. Looks like those are made to carry A kayak, not much more.

Look at Rhino. Prinsu has that cargo basket kit. Gets two higher bars.

Gotcha. Yeah, I didn't really consider the weight of 4 kayaks.

For dynamic load ratings of 200-250+ you're into a full blown roof rack, especially if you don't like the design of multiple yakima/thule/rhino style cross bars.

Or you're crossing into bed rack territory depending on your desired styling and utility.

Yep, I already have the Yakima racks on the bed (welded to the TruckcoversUSA Tonneau) which I use for 2-3 bikes and 1-2 kayaks. But, for running shuttles I often need to be able to carry up to 6 boats total, hence the additional rack space up top.

That said, sounds like I'm back to Prinsu or something of the like though I will investigate the Rhino stuff a bit more.
