I think I'm gonna use my old HTC m8 for APRSdroid this season to see how I like it.

 

You just leave it in the truck at all times. Wire in permanent power and then you NEVER will forget your phone or anything. Fool proof.

For a $50 phone seems worth it to me..but whatever.


and ABS? what abs...i have no abs anymore.

 

Oh if you have an old HTC why not just do that?

I have a Droid in Igor all the time in the mount. When i feel like doing APRS, which really is just on trips out of town. I just fire it up. I like having it in its spot though all the time. I always know it's there.

 

I have to agree with Monte on this. I'd like to keep my phone and free if I want. I will try using APRSdroid on the m8 and get BC Nav on the tablet for it's bitter screen. On our adventures, they will live permanently in the truck with dedicated power.

My phone will then only have phone duties, i.e., wifi/web/hotspot, text, email and calls.

 

The only downside to this is, when living in an urban setting, they can be targets/incentives for thieves.

I guess I see it as a dedicated screen to a dedicated use. Aprs to one screen. BCN for another. Normal call/text/email on the other.

Last thing I need to be doing is swapping apps all the time on my phone while driving anywhere much less offroad.

 

If I have to leave the redhead parked in a public space for any length of time, I do not leave the the ham radio faceplate, the tablet or the phone visible.

 

Yea neither does my Dad. I'll no doubt have to start doing that.

Offroad we hit 30-45mph all the time and that is plenty fast to fuck shit up if you accidentally go off onto the "Shoulder" lol
which often is a steep mountain.

Yea Mike did do that..but give him a break on that trip. He had to scramble just to make that work as it was. Wasn't like that in Utah

So why set yourself up to fail now?

I can see it now..

Set up the tablet or spare phone so that it is easily removable just as you do with your current set up. When parking the truck take them out and slide under the seat or wherever.


Then when getting ready to go on a trip, pop them in the docks and boom your ready set to go. And regardless of not needing to worry about traffic offroad its just convenient to not have to swap apps at all.

Plus gotta get at least +10 expedition points for having some tablets and phones mounted with maps on them.

 

I think you're just not smart enough to be able to assess the incoming data from more than one screen at a time.

WTF you gonna do if you have to follow a gpx track. APRSdroid aint gonna help you with that.

Devin might agree with that Although, the biggest distracting for me is the view out the window usually..haha
