First Question: Anyone have experience with Bilstein 4600 shocks quickly going bad?

I've got about 10,000 miles and 11 months on the pair pictured below. I'd say about 30% of that mileage is off-road in the Phoenix, AZ area. The non-TRD Toyota base model shocks were not leaking when I removed them and they did substantially more miles than these did, 95,000.

Second Question: I do not want to spend big money on a remote reservoir shock. Are the Bilstein 5100, OME 60091, or Fox 2.0 more reliable - Or should I just go back to Toyota shocks?

As always, thanks guys/gals - Chuck

I'm sure that 5100s would be much better. I am planning on buying some soon for my truck. The stock TRD bilstein shocks are not the greatest for offroading and I think 30% off road for 10,000 miles would do them in.

all depends on how much you're willing to spend. a couple hundred or several hundred. assuming your stock I would go with 5100s best bang for the buck

I will be running fox 2.0 w/resi on dakar leaf packs. Haven't installed them yet though. :( but from what I read about them they seem to do rather well

LOVE the 5100's, they have been amazing and I have put them to the test...well as much of a test as Mississippi can offer. Just wanted to add my 2 cents on the 5100's.

The Bilstein 4600's are not stock. They are a beefier version than Toyota supplied with the TRD package. They should not be failing at 10K. I'd contact Bilstein and ask for a refund or compensation. That cannot be normal.

The 4600 doesn't seem popular here as most everyone is running a lift. The 5100 requires at least a 1" lift, which is why I didn't go with it for the rear suspension.

Bilstein 4600s are installed by the manufacturer. Therefore they are stock.

5100s are the same as 4600HDs.

Valving slightly different as they're designed for lifted vehicles. Other than that, no difference in construction or design.

Unless OP is lifted, telling him 5100s are better is pretty silly.

4600's are not installed by Toyota. I know because I bought some and compared them with what came on my TRD taco. Not the same.

But I stand by the recommendation to get 5100s! Go for the lift!

I replaced my really old ironman mud terrains tires, front struts, & rear shocks w/Bilstein 4600's all around. After 6K, mostly, highway miles my front, new ironman mud terrains, tires became lumpy/uneven wear. I couldn't believe it, did I receive a defective set of struts?
